Umesh, Renowned Kannada Actor, Passes Away at 80
Umesh, a celebrated actor in Kannada cinema, has died at the age of 80. He passed away on 30 November 2025 in a hospital in Bengaluru, following a prolonged battle with advanced liver cancer. The actor was surrounded by family at the time of his passing, as reported by Asianet.
Umesh was known for his significant contributions to the film industry over a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades and included over 350 films. His distinctive style of dialogue delivery and comedic talent endeared him to audiences, making him one of the most cherished figures in Kannada cinema.
His journey in the film industry began in 1960 with the movie 'Makkala Rajya', directed by BR Panthulu. Umesh's talent was recognised in 1975 when he received the Karnataka State Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 'Katha Sangama'.
Towards the end of his life, Umesh faced serious health challenges. In October of this year, he suffered a fall at his home, which initially seemed to result in minor injuries. However, subsequent medical examinations revealed the devastating news that he was suffering from stage-four liver cancer. Doctors confirmed that despite his outwardly robust appearance, the cancer had metastasised to other organs, necessitating the cancellation of a planned surgery.
Even in his final days, Umesh's spirit remained undiminished. A video circulated on social media showed him singing and joking with visitors, a testament to his enduring optimism even in the face of adversity. Actress Girija Lokesh, who visited him shortly before his death, shared that he continued to bring laughter to those around him, despite the pain he was enduring.
Umesh's last film appearance was in 'Kamal Sridevi', released earlier this year. He also played a significant role in 'Kuladalli Keelayudo', further solidifying his legacy as a versatile actor in the Kannada film industry.
As arrangements are made for his final viewing at his residence in JP Nagar, the Kannada cinema community mourns the loss of a beloved comic legend. His contributions to the arts will be remembered by fans and peers alike, ensuring that his legacy endures in the hearts of many.
