Ukrainian President Denounces Russian Attack on Cargo Ship in Black Sea
Volodymyr Zelensky condemns a Russian drone strike that sank a cargo ship in Romanian waters, resulting in fatalities and highlighting ongoing tensions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has labelled a Russian drone strike on a cargo ship in the Black Sea as 'horrific'. The attack reportedly resulted in the death of the ship's captain and left another crew member unaccounted for. Eleven crew members, who were nationals from Azerbaijan and India, were successfully rescued following the incident.

On Monday, Romania's Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that a fire had erupted on board the ship, identified as Royad Mammadov, approximately 30 nautical miles south of Sfantu Gheorghe, a Romanian port. The Romanian authorities indicated that two individuals have died due to the strike, while the reason behind the fire remains unclear.

According to President Zelensky, the incident highlights a continuous trend of aggression from Russia, which he claims is systematically targeting civilian vessels. 'This strike on a civilian vessel carrying corn and owned by Turkey demonstrates Russia's choice of terror over normal maritime navigation,' Zelensky stated in a social media post.

Russia has not yet commented on this specific incident, but Russian military officials had previously stated that they were targeting two cargo vessels in response to Ukrainian assaults on Russian oil infrastructure. President Zelensky asserted that Ukraine began its operations against oil facilities to undermine Russia’s financial resources for the ongoing conflict, which escalated with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The tension has not only impacted the Black Sea but also exacerbated fears of broader instability in Eastern Europe. Romania has, alongside other NATO member nations, reported similar incursions within its airspace, as drone usage rises on both sides of the conflict. The Romanian naval forces have confirmed the destruction of nine drifting sea mines since the beginning of hostilities.

With the situation becoming increasingly precarious, President Zelensky voiced the need for international pressure to ensure global food security. He emphasised that all nations should contribute to restoring stability in the Black Sea region, a crucial area for grain exports.

This latest drone incursion follows a pattern of increased military activity this year, with Western allies, notably Germany, expressing concern over the possible ramifications of such strikes. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that his government is preparing for heightened hybrid warfare scenarios amid rising tensions.

On a broader level, the incidents underscore ongoing vulnerabilities in NATO’s eastern flank, raising concerns about potential spillover effects of the conflict into neighbouring countries. As both Ukraine and Russia utilise advanced drone technology, the risk of miscalculations continues to loom large, necessitating heightened vigilance across all affected nations.
