Ukraine Protests Erupt Following Defence Minister's Dismissal
Ukrainians voice their anger over President Zelensky's decision to replace Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov amidst military tensions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent decision to remove Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has sparked significant unrest across the country. Protests erupted in Kyiv and other cities, with demonstrators calling for Fedorov's reinstatement and denouncing the government’s actions. Many protesters, primarily young citizens, gathered near the Ivan Franko National Theatre in central Kyiv, holding placards with phrases like "Hands off Fedorov" and "Stop sabotaging victory!". They chanted slogans such as "Shame!" in a display of dissatisfaction towards the presidential decision.

By the end of the day, Zelensky nominated Major General Yevhenii Khmara, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), as the new acting defence minister. During his announcement, Zelensky praised Khmara’s extensive experience in technology-driven combat operations, suggesting a shift in focus for military strategy.

Initial speculation surrounding Fedorov's dismissal was partly confirmed by both Zelensky and Fedorov himself, who acknowledged ongoing tensions with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Fedorov indicated that he had proposed the removal of both Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov, reflecting deep divisions within Ukraine's military leadership. At a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelensky admitted that conflicts between the defence ministry and the General Staff had been "systemic" and required mediation.

Fedorov, who was appointed just six months ago, has been seen as a reformist within the Defence Ministry, credited with enhancing Ukraine's drone warfare capabilities and leading anti-corruption efforts. He expressed frustration over being unable to carry out necessary reforms, stating that proposals for defeating Russia asymmetrically were often obstructed.

In a response to his removal, Fedorov took to social media, emphasising his pride in the achievements during his tenure, which included significant campaigns against Russian forces. He highlighted his ministry's contributions to Ukraine's military efforts, such as disrupting enemy communications and boosting domestic drone production.

Protests in various cities, including Lviv, Odesa, and Dnipro, showcased widespread discontent among citizens and military personnel alike. Oleksandr, a soldier, expressed his disappointment, labelling the decision as the worst mistake of Zelensky’s presidency and asserting that the move lacked support within the military community. Another protester, Maria Lavrynets, stressed the importance of standing behind effective leadership and the motivation of Ukrainian soldiers.

In light of the protests, Zelensky acknowledged the public's emotions and stated, "I understand, I hear, and I even react to what society is saying." This reshuffle is part of a broader realignment within the Ukrainian government, which also saw the appointment of Serhiy Koretsky as the new Prime Minister, succeeding Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Amidst these changes, the newly appointed Prime Minister pledged to focus on equipping Ukraine's defence forces and expanding its military-industrial capabilities. As the conflict with Russia continues to escalate, the implications of Fedorov’s dismissal and the resulting protests may pose further challenges for the Zelensky administration as it navigates the intricacies of wartime governance and military strategy.
