Spain's De la Fuente Celebrates Return to World Cup Final
Spain's manager Luis de la Fuente reflects on their journey to the World Cup final, reviving the spirit of their 2010 triumph after a win over France.

Spain's national football team has reached the final of the World Cup, marking a potential return to glory reminiscent of their remarkable victory in 2010. After a commanding 2-0 victory over France in the semifinals, manager Luis de la Fuente expressed that his team's performance brought back the essence of their earlier triumph. Spain, who captured their first World Cup title 16 years ago, faced a French side that had been prolific, scoring 16 goals in prior matches. However, during the semifinal, Spain's defence effectively neutralised the threats posed by the French attackers, who struggled to register a shot on target until late in the game. De la Fuente highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating, “The message was that we were up against one of the best teams in the world, but that they were up against the best team in the world.” He noted the commitment, talent, and solidarity demonstrated by his players, reflecting the same spirit that defined the 2010 squad led by goalkeeper Iker Casillas. The coach remarked on the positive atmosphere within the squad, indicating that even those who did not play remained dedicated, choosing to train after the match. He attributed Spain's success to a humble and united approach, emphasising the significance of teamwork and shared goals among the players. “We know that this team – not just the players, but everyone who makes up the squad – works towards a common goal,” he said. “We are ordinary, generous people who seek the common good before our own individual interests.” With this latest victory, Spain has equalled Italy's record of 37 consecutive unbeaten matches. Despite this accomplishment, de la Fuente remains focused on improvement, expressing a belief that the team has not yet reached its full potential. “This team never ceases to amaze me. The scope for improvement is endless,” he stated, acknowledging the hard work and dedication that has brought them to this pivotal moment in the tournament. Looking ahead to the final, de la Fuente expressed a desire to face Argentina, citing his friendship with their manager, Lionel Scaloni. He also praised England, commenting that their semifinal clash could easily be viewed as a future World Cup final matchup. “Finals are there to be enjoyed,” de la Fuente remarked. “What’s to come could be the icing on the cake.”
