Ukraine Claims No US Warning Before Russian Missile Attacks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticises the US for insufficient intelligence prior to Russian missile strikes, raising concerns about support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed serious concerns regarding a lack of warning from the United States before recent Russian missile strikes on Kyiv. In a statement made following the attacks on the night of Sunday through Monday, Zelensky noted that there had been no prior notification from American intelligence, which is typically expected during such threats. He stated, “We received no warning from our partners about the first wave of the attack. And I'm talking first of all about the American early warning of missile threats.”

This incident marks the third occasion within a week where Ukraine reportedly received inadequate warning about incoming Russian strikes. Zelensky emphasized that this lack of communication was alarming and demanded a clear explanation from U.S. officials for the intelligence gap. He remarked, “This is already the third time in a short period that we have had no such warning about ballistic missiles.”

In the wake of the missile attacks, tensions have escalated between Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump, who has publicly countered claims regarding intelligence sharing. Trump told reporters, “We share intelligence, we share a lot.” He further asserted that Ukraine has not reciprocated adequately in terms of support. This fallout comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the U.S. response to the conflict in Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have suggested that the United States may have altered its approach to intelligence sharing, thus permitting Russian missile strikes to proceed without prior alerts. Bloomberg reported that the US reinstated its early warning capabilities only after the first wave of attacks occurred, which adds to suspicions among Ukrainian leaders about the United States’ commitment to their security.

A senior official within the U.S. Department of Defense, speaking anonymously, maintained that there has been no formal change in policy concerning intelligence sharing with Ukraine. However, Ukrainian military officials argue that the level of support has been unusually inconsistent over the past week. There are concerns that this inconsistent intelligence flow might have contributed to the effectiveness of the recent Russian offensive while leaving Ukrainian forces vulnerable.

Azhar Ali from Bloomberg noted that the temporary suspension of intelligence sharing was an unusual measure, particularly as it closely followed a meeting involving Trump, Zelensky, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance, which reportedly ended in heated disagreement. The strategic implications of these developments are being closely monitored as the conflict persists, raising questions about the future of Western support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
