UK and Australia Condemn Israeli Settlements Amid Ongoing Conflict
UK and Australia criticise Israel for settlement expansion and military accountability amid escalating tensions in the region.

In recent developments regarding the ongoing conflict, both the United Kingdom and Australia have voiced strong opposition to actions taken by the Israeli government. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has condemned the publication of a tender for Israel’s E1 settlement project, labelling it "unacceptable and destructive." He warned that this initiative threatens to sever the occupied West Bank from East Jerusalem and jeopardises the viability of a two-state solution. Miliband stated that he communicated directly with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, insisting that Israel must halt the E1 plans immediately, retract the tender, and cease all settlement expansion. This E1 project involves building thousands of housing units in a corridor intended to connect Jerusalem with the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim, effectively dividing the occupied West Bank into two parts. The Foreign Secretary expressed concern over settler violence and illegal settlement expansion, noting their "catastrophic" impact on Palestinian communities and the risk of creating "irreversible divisions" detrimental to the prospect of a viable Palestinian state. Miliband reiterated that Britain will take a stand against actions that threaten this solution, informing that the government would be outlining a comprehensive set of measures, including sanctions against those involved in illegal settlements, shortly. Meanwhile, Australia has summoned Israel’s ambassador to express its outrage regarding the Israeli military's decision not to pursue criminal charges related to a 2024 drone strike that resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers from the organisation World Central Kitchen. Among the deceased was 43-year-old Australian citizen Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom. Following an internal review, the Israeli military determined there was no reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct to warrant investigations into the incident. The timing of this announcement, coinciding with World Humanitarian Day, was described by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong as "especially insulting" to those affected and the humanitarian community. Wong stated that the Australian government expects accountability beyond disciplinary measures for the serious nature of the incident, pledging ongoing demands for justice and transparency from Israel. In a separate statement, former US President Donald Trump claimed that the United States is initiating "the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY"—specifically referring to Iran. Trump maintained that no previous administration had given Iran a better chance to negotiate but stressed their failure to do so. He warned that any country engaging with Iran's financial operations could face substantial economic consequences and declared that various forms of support for Iran must cease immediately. The UAE has also recently severed financial ties with Iran, citing intercepted Iranian missiles believed to target commercial shipping, which Iran dismissed as a false-flag operation. Former US senior naval officer Harlan Ullman suggested that both nations need to begin discussions, highlighting that continuing the trade cutoff is not in their interests. Iran, adopting a more aggressive stance, is expected to leverage partnerships with groups like Hezbollah and Hamas in response to ongoing pressures. Discussions involving the United States, Israel, Turkey, and Syria regarding these developments are reportedly ongoing, as stated by a US State Department spokesperson who emphasised the importance of restraint and dialogue in moving forward.
