Ugandan Army Chief Demands $1 Billion and Turkish Wife
The Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has made significant demands from Turkey, triggering a wave of reactions. His initial request is for $1 billion, which he claims is compensation for Uganda's military efforts against Islamic militants in Somalia. His second, more controversial demand, is for what he terms 'the most beautiful woman' in Turkey to become his wife.
Kainerugaba, who is also the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has faced criticism for his statements, which many view as bizarre and sexist. This is not the first instance where he has made outlandish proposals; in 2022, he suggested offering 100 cows for the marriage of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
In a series of posts on the social media platform X on 11 April, Kainerugaba accused Turkey of profiting from various infrastructural projects in Somalia, arguing that Uganda has shouldered the security burden in the region for nearly two decades. His remarks highlight Uganda's ongoing military involvement within the framework of the African Union, specifically aimed at combats against Al-Shabaab, a militant group linked to Al-Qaeda.
Kainerugaba has stipulated that Turkey must comply with his requests within 30 days, threatening significant diplomatic action if ignored. He warned of potential actions including closing the Turkish embassy in Kampala and restricting Turkish Airlines from operating in Ugandan airspace.
“On top of the $1 billion from Turkey, I want the most beautiful woman in that country for a wife!” he stated in a post, outlining his demands. He further emphasized the seriousness of his position, stating, “For Turkey, it’s a really simple deal... Either they pay us or I close their embassy here.”
In addition to his demands, Kainerugaba has publicly expressed support for Israel, suggesting a willingness to send 100,000 Ugandan soldiers to protect the state, framing his offer as a commitment to international allies.
This latest incident marks one among many where Kainerugaba's statements have led to public backlash. His past threats, including an alarming proposition to invade Kenya, previously resulted in a temporary suspension from his military role due to the diplomatic implications.
Historically, Kainerugaba's outspoken nature has often led to controversy, prompting reactions from both domestic and international audiences. Following his comments regarding Italy in 2022, President Museveni felt compelled to issue an apology, underscoring the need for respect in international relations.
At this point, there has been no response from either Turkish or Somali officials regarding Kainerugaba's recent demands. Moreover, it remains unclear if these statements reflect the official position of the Ugandan government or are purely personal expressions from the General.
