UFC 330: Islam Makhachev Sets Record with Win Over Ian Machado Garry
Islam Makhachev reinforced his position as one of the premier fighters in mixed martial arts by securing a decisive victory over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330, held at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. This win marked Makhachev's historic 17th consecutive victory in the UFC, surpassing the previous record held by Anderson Silva since 2010, which was an impressive 16-fight winning streak.
Makhachev, originally a former lightweight champion, now reigns over the welterweight division. He showcased his superior grappling and control throughout the bout, ultimately winning by unanimous decision with scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47.
The 34-year-old Russian dominated the fight, particularly in the grappling exchanges. From the onset, Makhachev executed his game plan effectively, taking down Machado Garry in the first round and maintaining control against the cage. Although the Irish fighter displayed resilience, including attempts to land significant strikes, Makhachev's wrestling prowess remained a significant factor.
In the second round, Makhachev delivered a head kick that staggered Machado Garry, leading to another successful takedown. Despite the Irishman’s best efforts to turn the fight around, including managing a few successful strikes, Makhachev continued to assert his dominance with seven successful takedowns and over 12 minutes of total control on the ground.
Post-fight, Makhachev expressed respect for his opponent, stating, "Ian is a great fighter, good man and I respect him. He gave me a hard time but I still prove every fight."
Following this fight, Machado Garry, at 28 years old, reflected on his performance, acknowledging his determination to come back stronger. "To all my fans, Ireland, everybody, I'm sorry I couldn't get this done... I’ll be back,” he stated.
In the co-main event, Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her strawweight title against Gillian Robertson. The American fighter controlled the fight with her grappling and strike exchanges, winning decisively by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47). Dern, who has now secured four straight victories, noted the improvements in her wrestling skills post-fight, pleased with maintaining her championship status.
Looking ahead, the UFC confirmed that Alexander Volkanovski of Australia will defend his featherweight title against Russia's Movsar Evloev at UFC 333, scheduled for 24 October in Abu Dhabi. The event will also feature a significant bantamweight rematch between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili along with other exciting matchups.
The achievements of Makhachev have further fuelled discussions among fans and analysts about his potential status as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history. As he continues to build upon his already impressive record of 29 wins against just one loss, the future appears bright for the athlete and the UFC as a whole.
