Uddhav Thackeray Revives Shiv Sena's Hindutva Rhetoric
Uddhav Thackeray launches 'Ram Raksha Andolan' over Ayodhya donations, claiming Hindus are being exploited by the ruling government.

Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), addressed hundreds of party supporters in Dadar, Mumbai, following a recitation of Hindu hymns. His remarks were centred on the Ram Mandir donation irregularities and the historical significance of Hindutva, a concept central to his party's ideology, founded by his father, Bal Thackeray.

During the rally, Thackeray accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting Hindus, asserting, "Today Hindus have been hypnotised. I urge all Hindus from the country to awake and fight against those looting Lord Ram." He called for a revitalisation of the Hindutva movement, stressing the importance of returning to its true roots.

The event was part of Thackeray's 'Ram Raksha Andolan' or 'Movement to Save Lord Ram', aimed at addressing concerns regarding how donations made to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, were being handled. He recalled a slogan made famous by his father: "Garv Se Kaho Hum Hindu Hain" (Be Proud and Say 'We are Hindus'). This message aimed to instil a sense of pride among Hindus, in his view, undermined by the current government.

In what may reflect ongoing tensions within Maharashtra's political landscape, Thackeray's remarks reiterated his party’s identity amidst the backdrop of the Shiv Sena's split in 2022, when Eknath Shinde broke away and formed a government with the BJP. The fracture was marked by disagreements over the party's alignment and ideological direction, with Shinde accusing Thackeray's faction of drifting from its foundational principles by allying with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Thackeray's criticisms extended to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, alleging systematic exploitation of Hindus and referring to a civil services officer's concerns over the utilisation of gold donations intended for temple enhancements. He emphasised, "We are fierce, innocent, nation-loving Hindus, but not fools."

While the BJP has dismissed allegations of financial irregularities regarding the Ram Mandir, notable developments have occurred within the temple trust. Its general secretary stepped down amid ongoing investigations, and police actions have included arrests related to the donation processes.

Thackeray's speech resonated with a historical narrative from the epic Ramayana, connecting it to his party's movement against perceived injustices. He proclaimed, "Ram bhakts will burn the golden Lanka of Ravan. We will burn the Lanka of injustice."

The implications of this rally extend beyond merely addressing the donation controversy; it signals Thackeray's intent to reclaim the narrative surrounding Bal Thackeray's vision of Hindutva. The surrounding political atmosphere remains fraught, especially given the Election Commission's designation of the Shinde faction as the official Shiv Sena in 2023, further complicating the landscape for the Uddhav camp, which now identifies as Shiv Sena (UBT). Subsequent defections have also contributed to the challenges facing Thackeray's faction as they navigate the shifting allegiances and public perceptions in Maharashtra politics.
