Uber Announces Job Cuts: 3,300 Employees Laid Off for Restructuring

Uber Technologies has announced the termination of 3,300 employees, representing approximately 10 per cent of its workforce. This marks the most significant reduction in staff since the COVID-19 pandemic began. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi informed employees in a memo that these layoffs aim to streamline management layers and simplify team structures. The focus of the restructuring is to create a leaner organisation which could enable clearer ownership, faster decision-making, and increased productivity. Furthermore, the company plans to reduce the number of 'micro-teams'—teams with one or two direct reports—by fifty per cent, according to the memo. Khosrowshahi emphasised that these changes are vital for Uber's aspiration to 'build the autonomous future' while increasing investments in drivers, couriers, and merchants. In addition to job cuts, Khosrowshahi indicated a push for employees to return to the office, asserting that only about one per cent of staff would be allowed to work remotely going forward. These layoffs are part of broader cost-cutting measures, including a previous reduction of 10 per cent of customer service roles due to the growing integration of artificial intelligence into the company's operations. Despite these job cuts, Uber has reported strong revenue growth. In its latest annual report, revenue rose by 18 per cent from 2024 to 2025, reaching $52 billion. The second quarter of 2026 also showed a 12 per cent increase in revenue, totalling $14.2 billion. However, while growth continues, Uber's stock has experienced a decline of approximately 8 per cent this year, although it saw a rise of over 1.6 per cent during midday trading on Wednesday.
