U.S. Expresses Concern Over China's Long-Range Missile Test
The United States has expressed significant concern regarding the recent test launch of a nuclear-capable missile by China. This development transpired on July 6, 2026, when China successfully fired a long-range ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine in the Pacific Ocean. According to a statement from Tommy Pigott, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, the United States monitored the missile launch, which was unarmed and concluded in the southern Pacific Ocean.
Pigott noted that while the United States intensifies efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, China's actions are perceived as opposite to these intentions. "Beijing's rapid and opaque nuclear weapons buildup is of great concern to the region and the world," he stated. The spokesperson reiterated the need for China to participate in meaningful arms control discussions and to establish a regular notification protocol regarding intercontinental-range ballistic missiles and space launches, as in line with the commitments made by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, of which China is a part.
In response to these concerns, the Chinese military described the test launch as a routine part of the annual training exercises of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. The PLA Navy claimed that relevant countries had been informed prior to the test and emphasised that the launch adhered to international law and practices, denying any specific target.
The implications of this development are significant, as tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate in various domains, particularly regarding military capacity and nuclear strategy. The United States maintains its commitment to supporting its allies and partners globally, aiming to foster stability amid evolving geopolitical dynamics. The situation continues to be monitored closely by international observers as dialogue on arms control remains pivotal in addressing these rising tensions.
