Trump to Decide on Russian Oil Tariffs Impacting India Within Days
US President Donald Trump is expected to make a critical decision regarding tariffs on Russian oil and gas imports within the next ten days. This information was shared by US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, during his address at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum held in New Delhi.
The legislation, known as the Lindsey O’ Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, allows Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on energy imports from nations purchasing Russian crude oil or gas. According to Ambassador Gor, thus far, the President has refrained from imposing sanctions under this law, which necessitates a decision within thirty days of its passage on 18 September.
The law is designed to provide the President with the authority to sanction countries that either buy Russian oil or assist in evading existing sanctions. However, Gor clarified that the sanctions are not directed at any specific nations. "The goal is not to punish anyone. The goal is to try to bring an end to this war," he stated, emphasising a desire for diplomatic resolution over punitive measures.
Officials from the US government do not expect countries, such as India, to abruptly halt their imports of Russian oil due to the new legislation. Instead, the administration seeks to work closely with global partners to gradually limit the financial resources flowing to support conflict.
India remains a key buyer of Russian crude, having imported approximately 1.82 million barrels per day in September, surpassing China’s 1.49 million barrels per day. The substantial bipartisan backing for the legislation in the US Congress—achieving 86 votes in the Senate—reflects political pressure for the White House to adopt a firm stance on this matter.
Furthermore, Gor indicated that ongoing discussions with Indian officials will likely continue during the anticipated visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. India has voiced concerns that any tariffs may negatively influence bilateral relations amid existing trade negotiations, which have encountered several challenges. Gor expressed confidence that despite these concerns, a trade deal between the two nations could be finalised, noting significant progress in negotiations that have been underway for roughly one and a half years.
In summary, with a looming deadline, Trump’s forthcoming decision regarding tariffs could have considerable implications for energy trading relationships, particularly with major importers like India. As discussions progress, the focus remains on finding collaborative solutions rather than punitive actions.
The political landscape surrounding this issue illustrates the complexities of international energy trade and the intertwined nature of global diplomacy, especially in relation to ongoing conflicts such as the one in Ukraine.
