Trinamool Congress Loses Falta to BJP in West Bengal Elections
In a surprising turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed victory in the Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal, a traditional stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The electoral results were announced on May 4, subsequent to the second round of polling on April 29. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda emerged triumphant with a total of 149,421 votes. This overwhelming win marked a stark contrast to the performance of the TMC's Jahangir Khan, who finished in fourth place with merely 6,257 votes.
Abhishek Banerjee, who is the TMC’s National General Secretary and a prominent MP from the adjacent Diamond Harbour constituency, previously referenced the political rivalry in a controversial remark. He claimed that he was prepared to conduct final rites for some individuals after the election results were announced, suggesting that the result could lead to distress for TMC supporters. However, the outcome has turned the tables, sending the TMC, which has held power for 15 years, back to the opposition benches.
Falta, located in the South 24 Parganas district, has become emblematic of the TMC's former dominance, especially under the stewardship of Abhishek Banerjee. The MP's influence grew considerably between the 2014 and 2024 elections, showcasing a dramatic increase in vote margins—up to 7.1 lakh votes in recent elections. This stronghold is part of the Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency, which is viewed as an essential political fortress for the TMC.
The TMC attributes its sustained success in the region to what they term the 'Diamond Harbour Model', a mix of welfare initiatives and health infrastructure advancements. During the Covid-19 pandemic, local leaders mobilised community kitchens to support residents, which further bolstered their popularity.
Banerjee also initiated the programme Ek Dakey Abhishek (Abhishek at one call), allowing residents to directly report grievances to his office. A standout initiative, Shraddharghya, provided monthly pensions to approximately 70,000 senior citizens, fostering strong ties to the electorate.
Conversely, opposition parties allege that the TMC has maintained control through intimidation and electoral malpractice. BJP leaders have been vocal about the alleged manipulation of the political landscape in Diamond Harbour, labelling it as a hub of corruption and criminal activities. These claims include assertions that local law enforcement has sidelined opposition members.
In light of allegations surrounding vote tampering on April 29, including the inappropriate handling of electronic voting machines, the Election Commission mandated a complete repoll across 285 booths in Falta. This decision has heightened tensions, with Abhishek Banerjee expressing strong criticism of the BJP, describing them as outsiders attempting to undermine local governance.
As the dust settles on this unexpected electoral upheaval, analysts will be closely watching how the BJP will seek to consolidate its new power in an area previously dominated by the TMC, while local dynamics continue to unfold in the wake of these developments.
