Tribute to Rachna Shroff: Pioneering Oncologist Passes Away at 47
Indian-American oncologist Rachna Shroff, renowned for her work on bile duct cancer, has died at 47. Her legacy continues through cancer research and mentorship.

Rachna Shroff, an esteemed Indian-American oncologist known for her significant contributions to the field of oncology, has passed away at the age of 47. The University of Arizona, where she held key academic and clinical positions, announced her death following her battle with life-limiting cancer.

Dr Shroff made remarkable strides in the treatment of rare bile duct cancers, particularly cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and other hepatobiliary cancers. She served as the associate director of clinical investigations at the University of Arizona Cancer Center and was the chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the university’s College of Medicine–Tucson. She was also the inaugural John F. and Valli S. Duval Endowed Professor for Gastrointestinal Oncology, and her leadership in the field was widely recognised.

Her early interest in cancer research began during her schooling years, showcasing a drive that would shape her professional trajectory. Dr Shroff was raised in Tucson, Arizona, within a family deeply immersed in the medical sciences. Her father, Devendar Trivedi, was a biochemist, while her mother, Amita Trivedi, was a nephrologist. This nurturing environment instilled in her a passion for science and medicine.

In 1993, she was awarded the Osler Fellowship, allowing her to work in a laboratory at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. She then pursued her undergraduate education in biochemistry at Brown University before earning her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. Dr Shroff continued her training at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she completed her medical oncology fellowship in 2010. She remained on the faculty there until 2018, when she returned to Arizona to further develop cancer treatment initiatives.

Throughout her career, Dr Shroff authored over 80 scientific publications and delivered more than 130 professional presentations. She led critical clinical trials aimed at innovating treatment options for biliary and pancreatic cancers, areas of oncology that historically lacked effective therapies.

Even while facing her own health challenges, Dr Shroff remained dedicated to advancing cancer treatment research. In September, she was instrumental in establishing the Conquer Cancer–Rachna Shroff FASCO Endowed Young Investigator Award in Biliary Cancers, which raised over $1.35 million in a matter of weeks to support future research in the field.

Dr Shroff played a pivotal role in enhancing the gastrointestinal oncology programme at the University of Arizona Cancer Center and worked diligently to improve access to clinical trials for patients in southern Arizona. Her contributions have significantly reshaped treatment strategies in gastrointestinal oncology, increasing opportunities for patient outcomes.

She is survived by her husband, Puneet Shroff, a physician and professor of medicine, along with their two children, Simran and Sachin, her parents, and her sister Neema Sahni. The University of Arizona Cancer Center praised her as an internationally esteemed clinician-scientist, mentor, and a leader whose dedication to her patients and research endeavours will leave a lasting impact on the field of oncology. Dr Shroff’s legacy is one of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those affected by cancer.
