Tragic Plane Crash in Eastern France Claims Eleven Lives
A tragic incident occurred in Tomblaine, eastern France, where a civilian aircraft carrying skydivers crashed, leading to the deaths of eleven individuals. Local authorities reported that the victims comprised one pilot and ten passengers, consisting of five students and five instructors. The aircraft had departed from the Nancy-Essey airfield shortly before the crash, according to regional news sources.
In response to the incident, police have advised residents to stay clear of the vicinity surrounding the airport in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot, alongside Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, announced their intention to visit the crash site. Tabarot labelled the event as a "terrible tragedy."
Yves Seguy, the prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, confirmed that there were no casualties among bystanders during the event. The crash occurred in a densely populated area close to a shopping centre. Seguy remarked that the aircraft fell almost vertically near a housing estate, expressing relief that there were no additional victims.
Thierry Pechey, president of the Meurthe-et-Moselle branch of the Order of Independent Nurses, stated that half of the deceased skydivers were nurses. Local authorities also noted that family members of the victims were present at the airfield to witness the jump, marking the first skydiving experience for the five students involved.
One eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted seeing the plane veering to the right while driving past. Although he could not see the crash because of an embankment, he heard the impact and attempted to assist in extinguishing the wreckage, which had caught fire. "We saw right away that it was over, that they had all died instantly. There was no movement, and it was clear the impact had been too violent for there to be any survivors," he told Reuters.
A team of specialists is en route to investigate the cause of the crash, as confirmed by Chaynesse Khirouni, president of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. This tragic event has raised significant concerns regarding safety measures in light of the frequency of such operations in the region. The investigation is expected to focus on the aircraft's condition and the circumstances surrounding the flight.
