Tragic Incident Claims Life of 13-Year-Old During World Cup Festivities

A tragic incident during World Cup celebrations in Salamanca province, northwestern Spain, has resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy. The accident occurred shortly after midnight local time, when part of the Árbol Gordo fountain partially collapsed.

Emergency services reported that two other individuals sustained injuries, with one child being transported to a hospital due to a suspected broken bone in the leg. The celebration was marking Spain's victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.

Witnesses indicated numerous people were congregated around the fountain, celebrating Spain’s win when the structure crumbled. Local authorities received multiple calls reporting the incident, prompting swift intervention from emergency teams.

In response, the emergency service engaged local police, the Civil Guard, and a fire brigade. An intensive care unit and a basic life support ambulance were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured.

Following the boy's death, the emergency medical service requested the presence of the Civil Guard at the local health centre, where the fatal incident occurred. Psychological support services have also been activated for the grieving family as indicated by Castilla y León's regional government.

In a statement shared on social media, Ciudad Rodrigo's town hall expressed condolences, saying, "What was supposed to be a celebration for the victory of the Spanish National Football Team has turned into a tragedy."

Spain secured their second World Cup title, winning the final 1-0, with Ferran Torres scoring in extra time. This victory also follows a series of unfortunate events during World Cup celebrations globally, including incidents leading to multiple fatalities in Mexico City earlier this month. The city council of Ciudad Rodrigo expressed hopes for a swift recovery for the injured individuals involved in this incident.
