Tragic Incident in Andhra Pradesh: Child Dies After Taking Chloroquine

A seven-year-old girl has died after taking a chloroquine tablet during a malaria prevention programme in Gollaguppa village, located in the Polavaram district of Andhra Pradesh. More than 50 other villagers are currently receiving medical treatment following complaints of illness soon after consumption of the same medication. Chloroquine is a medication used to both prevent and treat malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Health officials reported that 71 people in total were administered chloroquine tablets as part of the drive targeting malaria prevention in the area. Tragically, Madavi Jamuna, a second-grade student, succumbed to her condition while receiving care. Doctors at a local health facility indicated that she was brought in after showing symptoms that included vomiting. Of those who fell ill, 29 individuals were transferred to a hospital in Telangana, while another 24 were admitted to a local health centre. Authorities have reported that the conditions of those currently in care are stable. In response to this unfortunate event, the district administration has stepped up medical surveillance efforts in Gollaguppa. A specialised team, comprising three paediatricians, has been dispatched to the village to assist in the ongoing treatment response. Furthermore, a medical camp has been established to monitor the health of local residents and provide necessary care. A nine-member specialist team from the Government General Hospital in Kakinada has also arrived in the village, with additional teams from Vijayawada, Rajamahendravaram, and Kakinada expected to join. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has requested a comprehensive report from senior health officials and the district collector regarding the incident. This report will encompass details on how the tablets were distributed, as well as the treatment measures taken for those affected. The unfortunate incident has raised concerns regarding health protocols during mass medication campaigns, particularly in remote areas where malaria remains an endemic concern. Local authorities are under scrutiny to ensure safety measures are implemented effectively to protect the vulnerable populations in such regions.
