Tragedy Strikes as Delhi Building Collapse Claims Student Lives

A devastating incident occurred in south-west Delhi's Satya Niketan area on Sunday when a five-storey paying guest accommodation building collapsed, leading to the tragic deaths of five students. The building collapse has raised alarms about the safety and regulation of such structures in the city, as well as the state of urban infrastructure.

Among the deceased was 18-year-old Arpit from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, who had returned to Delhi just hours before the disaster. His father, Bhupendra Jahaj, who works as a cab driver, expressed profound sorrow, stating, "We saw him happy and playful, and now we are seeing him as a dead body." Arpit was preparing for Chartered Accountancy examinations and was a second-year student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College.

Family members reported receiving the alarming news from Arpit's friends after the collapse. Bhupendra Jahaj recounted that “by the time we reached here, nothing was left and he was gone.” Identifying Arpit was difficult due to the condition of his body, which was severely injured. Ultimately, Arpit’s family chose to donate his corneas, reflecting their hope that he might continue to see the world even after his death.

The collapse also claimed the life of Yuvraj, another second-year Chartered Accountancy aspirant from Motilal Nehru College. His friends expressed disbelief and heartbreak at the sudden loss. Yuvraj had moved into the accommodation only recently.

Manta Singh Yadav, the father of another victim, Akshat, recalled how normal family life had felt just days before. Akshat had recently returned to Delhi from a holiday for Rakshabandhan celebrations, and his sudden injury due to the collapse left his family in shock. Yadav lamented, “We assumed that our child was safe away from us.” Akshat, like Yuvraj and Arpit, had no prior indication of structural issues with the PG accommodation.

The impact of the collapse was felt far and wide, with multiple families devastated by the loss of their children. Abhishek, also a victim, succumbed to his injuries after being pulled from the rubble. Hailing from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, he was two years into his BCom studies at Motilal Nehru College.

The situation prompted criticisms of local regulatory frameworks regarding building safety. Onlookers and witnesses have voiced concerns regarding the condition of the PG accommodation. A family friend of one of the students, Krish Kandari, alleged that the building had long been in a deteriorative state, urging for accountability from those responsible for the tragic incident.

The local authorities have announced that they will review accommodation safety across the region and take necessary action. Following the building collapse, multiple injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, with at least two reported to be in critical condition.

As news of the incident circulates, demands for greater accountability and stricter enforcement of safety regulations in densely populated urban areas continue to grow, highlighting a significant public safety concern in the heart of the capital. The tragic loss of young lives serves as a somber reminder of the need for improved oversight in the construction and maintenance of residential buildings in urban environments.
