Three Ships Hit by Unexplained Projectiles in Strait of Hormuz
Three vessels, including a crude oil tanker and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker, were struck by unknown projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO). The incidents, reported on Wednesday, involve a third unidentified ship that was also hit, with UKMTO clarifying that all three vessels sustained damage from an unknown projectile. Specific details surrounding the incidents were not disclosed by the agency.
This occurrence has heightened concerns regarding the safety of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passageway for global oil and gas transportation. The area has been a focus of escalating tensions recently, particularly in light of ongoing hostilities between the United States and Iran.
In related developments, Iranian authorities announced they had received an official response from the United States regarding Tehran's proposals aimed at ending the conflict in the region. US President Donald Trump had previously rejected these proposals, which included measures to halt hostilities and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Although military engagements have decreased in frequency in recent weeks, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards indicated that operations against small vessels attempting to navigate through the strait are ongoing.
An earlier incident, which did not receive widespread coverage, occurred on September 14 when an Iranian anti-ship cruise missile struck a vessel operated by US Marines in the same region. NBC News, citing three US officials, reported that this incident resulted in smoke inhalation and potential traumatic brain injuries among the Marines present at the time, although no serious injuries were reported. The Pentagon had not disclosed details of this attack, and the US Central Command declined to comment on the matter to NBC News.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains precarious, with shipping activity closely monitored amidst increasing geopolitical tensions. The UKMTO continues to issue advisories regarding maritime security in this vital maritime corridor.
