Thailand's King Rama X: A Closer Look at His Royal Consorts
King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, known as Rama X, navigates a complex legacy of royal consorts amidst modern challenges.

Queen Suthida, the wife of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also referred to as Rama X, made headlines recently for becoming the first queen in the world to pilot a fighter jet solo. This unprecedented event took place in Surat Thani on October 8, 2023, with King Rama X present to welcome her upon landing. This occasion has spotlighted not only the queen but the broader topic of royal consorts within the Thai monarchy.

The tradition of royal consorts in Thailand can be traced back to the history of the Siamese monarchy, where kings had multiple wives. This practice was connected to themes of dynastic succession and alliances between the monarchy and influential families. In English, the term 'concubine' is often associated with these women, yet it fails to encapsulate the nuances of their roles.

King Rama V, who ruled from 1868 to 1910, is noted for having a significant royal household, with historical records suggesting he fathered 77 children. The transition towards monogamy in Siam began in the late 19th century as it sought to modernise amid European expansion. This gradual shift culminated with King Prajadhipok, or Rama VII, formalising the principle of monogamy in the 1920s.

In a return to royal tradition, King Maha Vajiralongkorn appointed Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi as his Royal Noble Consort in July 2019, just two months after his marriage to Queen Suthida. Her appointment was significant because it marked the first time a royal consort had been designated in nearly a century. However, her position was not without controversy; in October 2019, she was stripped of her titles and ranks due to allegations of disloyalty. Notably, these titles were restored in August 2020.

Andrew MacGregor Marshall, a journalist, provided insight into King Vajiralongkorn’s life, referencing a harem he established in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, characterised by strict adherence to royal customs. Reports from Marshall also highlight Oranong Suwannasri, a member of this harem, who was promoted in 2024 to a special position as a Royal Guard and granted the rank of major general.

Adding to the royal intrigue, Oranong’s unique position was emphasised when she accompanied King Rama X to an official event without Queen Suthida, underlining a growing visibility of royal consorts in contemporary Thai society. Recent visits made by the king and Oranong to significant temples in Bangkok further underscore this dynamic.

As the monarchy navigates modern themes of transparency and public perception, the history of royal consorts and their roles within the palace remains a point of interest. The juxtaposition of traditional royal practices against the backdrop of a modernising nation presents a fascinating narrative about the ongoing evolution of the Thai monarchy.
