The Telangana State Election Commission has officially announced the schedule for municipal elections, which will take place on 11 February 2026. The elections will cover seven municipal corporations and 116 municipalities across the state. This will involve voting in a total of 2,582 wards within 116 municipalities and 414 wards of the seven municipal corporations, covering all 32 districts of Telangana.
Ahead of the election, the voter base will include over 52.43 lakh individuals, comprised of approximately 26.80 lakh female voters, 25.62 lakh male voters, and 640 other voters. The notification for the elections will be issued on 1 February 2026, and the process for filing nominations will begin immediately thereafter, concluding on 30 January.
Following the nomination period, scrutiny of candidates will occur on 31 January, leading to the publication of a list of validly nominated candidates. Candidates will have the opportunity to appeal their rejections on 1 February. The final day for withdrawal of nominations is set for 3 February, with a complete list of contesting candidates to be announced later that same day.
Election day is confirmed for 11 February, with a potential re-polling date of 12 February if necessary. Vote counting is scheduled for 13 February, with results expected to be announced later that evening.
The State Election Commissioner, I. Rani Kumudini, stated that the elections are crucial for not only fulfilling the democratic process within municipal governance but also for addressing the needs of local communities effectively.
After the elections, newly elected ward members will be sworn in on 16 February at 11 a.m., followed by a special meeting for the election of chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, mayors, and deputy mayors at 12:30 p.m. It is important to note that the elections for vice-chairpersons and deputy mayors cannot take place until the chairpersons and mayors are elected.
Prior to the elections, Commissioner Kumudini held a video conference with senior officials, including the Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy, to assess all necessary preparations for the upcoming electoral process. The Model Code of Conduct has also been activated to ensure a fair electoral environment during this period.
These elections will be closely watched, particularly as they provide insights into the political dynamics within Telangana and the electorate's response to various local issues.
