Tamil Nadu Political Tensions Rise Between DMK and Congress
Growing rifts between the DMK and Congress escalate amid support for actor-politician Vijay's new party, TVK, in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

In Tamil Nadu, escalating tensions between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Indian National Congress have emerged amid shifting political alliances. The rift is particularly notable as the Congress has opted to back the newly formed party led by actor-politician Vijay, the Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi (TVK), instead of continuing its alliance with the DMK, a partnership that has spanned over two decades.

Recent events have highlighted a breakdown in relations between the former allies, with workers from both parties reportedly clashing in the streets. Accusations of betrayal have surfaced, with the DMK accusing the Congress of opportunism. On Thursday, the DMK asserted that the 'INDIA bloc', their collective opposition against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has come to an end, reflecting the growing animosity between the two political entities.

The conflict intensified following the news that the DMK may contemplate an alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), historically seen as its rival, to thwart the TVK's ascendance in state politics. In a significant development, the TVK alliance, which has garnered votes and support from smaller parties such as the VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi) and Left factions, has reportedly reached the critical threshold of 118 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

This alliance has further alienated the DMK from the Congress, which was previously considered an ideological partner. DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi addressed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting a revision of seating arrangements for its MPs, indicating that the formation of the alliance with Congress no longer permits this arrangement. Karunanidhi articulated that due to the political landscape's rapid changes, it would be inappropriate for DMK members to retain their current groupings alongside Congress.

The DMK's actions underscore a worrying trajectory for the INDIA bloc, which had been seen as a formidable coalition in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With 22 MPs in the Lok Sabha and eight in the Rajya Sabha, the DMK was a crucial player in maintaining a united front against the BJP, preventing it from achieving a simple majority in previous contests.

In response, Congress has reframed the narrative, highlighting the potential alliance between the DMK and AIADMK as a betrayal. Congress MP Manickam Tagore pointed out on social media that the prospective unification of the two historically opposed Dravidian parties serves not the interests of Tamil Nadu or secularism, but merely the political ambitions of a single individual, referring to Vijay.

Tagore defended Congress's decision to support the TVK, asserting it honours the people's mandate while seeking to keep the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at bay. He regard the DMK's overtures to the AIADMK as aligning with the BJP, raising the question of whether Congress should rather aid the NDA. He maintained that the TVK has been consistently opposed to the BJP, reinforcing Congress's position.

The hostility erupted into physical altercations in Mayiladuthurai, where supporters of both parties clashed during a protest against the Tamil Nadu Governor's decision not to invite Vijay to form the government, despite his party achieving a leading position. These incidents indicate that the historical camaraderie between Congress and the DMK has deteriorated significantly.

As this political saga unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape Tamil Nadu's governance and its political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
