Tamil Nadu Government Offers ₹3,000 Cash Aid Ahead of Pongal Festival
The Tamil Nadu government announces ₹3,000 cash assistance for rice ration cardholders ahead of the Pongal festival, benefiting millions.

The government of Tamil Nadu has declared a cash assistance of ₹3,000 for all holders of family rice ration cards in anticipation of the upcoming Pongal festival. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made the announcement on Sunday, stating that this financial support would also extend to families residing in rehabilitation camps for Sri Lankan Tamils.

Currently, Tamil Nadu is home to approximately 22.3 million rice ration cardholders, as well as nearly 19,000 families living in these rehabilitation facilities. However, it is important to note that holders of sugar-only or no-commodity ration cards, numbering around 380,000, will not qualify for this cash assistance.

This ₹3,000 aid marks the highest cash amount allocated for the Pongal festival since the introduction of such assistance in 2014, when a mere ₹100 was provided per ration card. In the lead-up to the 2021 Assembly elections, the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government granted ₹2,500 to each ration cardholder.

Chief Minister Stalin stated that the total budget for the Pongal gift scheme this year is set at ₹6,936.18 crore, which will facilitate the distribution of cash assistance through local ration shop employees. In addition to the monetary support, beneficiaries will receive a hamper including one kilogram each of raw rice and sugar, as well as a sugarcane. Furthermore, 17.6 million ration cardholders will be provided with complimentary dhotis and sarees.

A senior official from the Food Department noted that the government had previously conducted a review of the linkage between ration cards and bank accounts, revealing that many cards were not linked. The Cooperation Department has been tasked with assisting in the establishment of new bank accounts, although this process remains incomplete. The possibility of a direct benefit transfer system will only be considered once all ration cards are linked to functioning bank accounts.

The tradition of providing cash assistance during Pongal dates back to 1990, initiated by then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who offered ₹100 to pensioners. This amount was gradually increased over the years, with the cash component rising to ₹150 in 1998. The distribution of cash alongside grocery items for Pongal was first implemented in January 2014 by then Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who allocated ₹100 along with one kilogram each of rice and sugar. Since then, except for the years 2015, 2021, and 2025, cash assistance and gift hampers have been provided during the festival.

In 2019, the cash component increased to ₹1,000, while beneficiaries received ₹2,500 in 2021, along with various gifts. In the subsequent years of 2023 and 2024, the cash gift was set at ₹1,000.

As Tamil Nadu prepares for the Pongal celebrations, the government's financial assistance aims to enhance the festive experience for millions of families across the state.
