Tamil Nadu CM C. Joseph Vijay Addresses Assembly in First Speech
C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, delivered his inaugural speech in the Legislative Assembly on 12 May 2026. His address marked a significant moment as he highlighted the importance of treating the views of all political parties with equal respect, regardless of their representation in the House.
During the session, Mr. Vijay extended his congratulations to the newly elected Speaker, J.C.D. Prabhakar, and Deputy Speaker, M. Ravisankar. He stated, "All are equal here. Be it a party that has one elected member or the members from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, who constitute the highest count, all must be treated equally." This emphasis on equality underscores his vision for inclusivity and collaborative governance in Tamil Nadu.
He articulated that the Assembly should function as both the heart and brain of the state, welcoming constructive ideas while dismissing those deemed unworthy. The Chief Minister further asserted that good values, including respect for fellow human beings, should transcend political affiliations and be upheld throughout the legislative process.
In a nod to Tamil culture, Mr. Vijay expressed hope that Speaker Prabhakar and Deputy Speaker Ravisankar would uphold the Assembly's traditions, dignity, and glory. Reflecting on the symbolic gestures observed during theSpeaker’s election, he noted the tradition where the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition escort the Speaker to the Chair, tracing its origins back to the United Kingdom before its adoption in Tamil Nadu.
In a lighter moment, Mr. Vijay shared an anecdote about the reluctance sometimes displayed by individuals accepting the Speaker's role, drawing a humorous parallel with the U.K., where the Leader of the House and Leader of the Opposition once had to "drag" the Speaker into the position, as he tended to shy away from the responsibility.
Additionally, the Chief Minister, who is also the president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, reassured Mr. Prabhakar of the full support from his party's legislators, reinforcing his commitment to a cooperative and effective Assembly.
As the Assembly convenes under new leadership, Mr. Vijay's call for unity and respect among political factions sets a tone of hope for productive governance in the state of Tamil Nadu.
