Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Launches Gold Ring Scheme for Newborns

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijayakanth launched a new initiative named the 'Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' in Madurai on September 28, 2026. This scheme aims to distribute one-gram gold rings to newborns delivered in government hospitals and facilities that receive government assistance. The inauguration took place at the Government Rajaji Medical College Hospital, where infants born around the time were presented with their gold rings.

The scheme is part of a government initiative intended to benefit approximately 420,000 to 440,000 infants annually. Each ring will be made of 22-carat gold and will bear the state emblem of Tamil Nadu, the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark, and a unique identification number. To ensure safety, the rings will be provided in tamper-proof packaging.

Eligibility for the scheme includes several criteria. The child's mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, while those from other states or transient residents are ineligible. Newborns must also be delivered in specified government hospitals, including government health centres and medical colleges. Unfortunately, infants born in private hospitals will not receive this benefit.

The mother must register for the scheme to receive the gold ring. It requires her to obtain an identification number and present various documents, such as a ration card, voter ID, Aadhar card, or proof of residence. All these documents will be verified upon the mother’s discharge from the hospital.

For those benefiting from the Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, multiple birth scenarios are accommodated. If twins are born, each child will receive a ring. Importantly, registration for the scheme must occur within three months of pregnancy.

The rings will be available at designated healthcare centres throughout Tamil Nadu, with the scheme officially open to infants born since September 27, the day prior to the launch. Mothers can collect their gold rings upon discharge after verifying their eligibility and supporting documents. As per a report from the local government, this initiative highlights the state's commitment to supporting new mothers and celebrating the birth of children.
