Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Allocates Portfolios to New Cabinet
On May 16, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay of Tamil Nadu allocated ministries to the nine newly sworn-in ministers following his recent assumption of office. As per an official announcement, Vijay will oversee several key departments, including Public Administration, Women and Youth Welfare, Municipal Administration, and Differently Abled Welfare.
Senior leader K A Sengottaiyan has been designated to manage the Finance portfolio, which includes oversight of pensions and pension allowances. S. Keerthana has been assigned to the Industries sector, along with responsibilities for Investment Promotion, marking her as a notable figure within the Cabinet.
Rajmohan, recognised for his media presence as ‘Put Chutney’ Rajmohan, has been appointed as the Minister for School Education, Tamil Development, and Information and Publicity. N. Anand, often referred to as Bussy Anand, takes charge of Rural Development and Water Resources. His role encompasses various areas, such as poverty alleviation and small irrigation projects.
Aadhav Arjuna is set to lead the Public Works and Sports Development departments, while K. G. Arunraj will oversee Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare. P. Venkataramanan has been assigned to manage Food and Civil Supplies, focusing on consumer protection and price control.
R. Nirmalkumar will head the Energy Resources and Law sectors, which involve oversight of electricity, courts, and legislative assemblies. T. K. Prabhu has been appointed as the Minister for Natural Resources, managing minerals and mines.
Sengottaiyan, the only minister with prior administrative experience, has previously held various significant portfolios in the cabinet of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Aadhav Arjuna's political journey includes a notable connection as the son-in-law of prominent lottery operator Santiago Martin. Anand has been a close ally of Vijay for over 15 years, coordinating initiatives for the party’s fan organisation.
Politically, Keerthana Sampath’s appointment as the first woman MLA from Sivakasi has attracted attention within Tamil Nadu's political circles. Dr Prabhu is also noted for having a substantial following on social media platforms, particularly Instagram, while Rajmohan is recognised for discussing pertinent issues concerning Tamil Nadu in his online videos.
Further portfolio allocations are anticipated as the cabinet may be expanded in the future.
