Tamil Music Composer Deva Passes Away Aged 75

Deva, a prominent figure in Tamil music, has passed away at the age of 75 following a cardiac arrest. The composer, celebrated for his unique 'gana' style rhythms, breathed his last at a private hospital in Chennai.

His son, Shrikanth Deva, confirmed the news to the press, stating, "All of a sudden our father left us; his death was following a cardiac arrest." Deva was widely recognised as a master of Tamil 'gana' songs, which encapsulate the experiences and sentiments of the working class.

The term 'gana' traditionally refers to music that emerged from rustic, indigenous backgrounds and resonates deeply with Tamil-speaking communities. Deva’s compositions often integrated colloquial Tamil, allowing him to connect with a broad audience across cultural and social divides.

In his illustrious career, Deva composed music for over 400 films in various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. His remarkable body of work spanned decades and included contributions to notable films across different genres.

Among those who expressed their condolences were Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and various political leaders. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, DMK President MK Stalin, and AIADMK leader D Jayakumar were among the prominent figures who paid their respects. Chief Minister Vijay announced state honours for Deva’s funeral, acknowledging his significant contribution to Tamil cinema.

Vijay noted, "Deva has captivated the hearts of the common people with his Gana songs, and his musical journey will endure in the history of film music." Leaders from the film industry, including stars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, visited Deva's home to pay floral tributes, highlighting the profound impact his music had on their careers and the cinema landscape.

Rajinikanth referred to Deva as “pure gold,” emphasising his notable contributions to blockbuster films such as 'Annamalai' and 'Baasha.' The composer secured a unique place in cinema history with his signature title-card score that has accompanied Rajinikanth in numerous films for over 30 years.

Deva began his career amid the towering presence of other legendary composers like Ilaiyaraja and the groundbreaking modern sound of A R Rahman. Despite the competition, he carved his niche with his catchy compositions that resonated with the masses.

His music was more than mere entertainment; it often reflected the realities and aspirations of ordinary people. AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami remarked on how Deva's humble beginnings allowed him to articulate the lives of everyday individuals through his art. BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan noted that Deva's music served as a source of inspiration for many.

Throughout his career, Deva collaborated with leading artists, composing memorable tracks for well-known actors such as Ajith Kumar and Vijay. Key hits include Deva's work on films like 'Kushi,' 'Kadhal Kottai,' and 'Avvai Shanmugi.' His ability to evoke emotion through music played a pivotal role in the narratives of these films.

As tributes continue to pour in, Deva’s legacy is likely to remain a significant part of Tamil film history. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry, ensuring that his music will be cherished for generations to come.
