Switzerland Advances to World Cup Quarterfinals After Defeating Colombia
Switzerland secures a historic quarterfinal spot by defeating Colombia in a dramatic penalty shootout at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Switzerland has reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1954 after emerging victorious against Colombia in a thrilling round of 16 match held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on 7 July 2026. The match ended in a goalless draw following extra time, leading to a penalty shootout in which Switzerland triumphed 4-3.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel played a pivotal role in Switzerland's success by saving a penalty kick from Colombian forward Cucho Hernandez, while Colombia's Davinson Sanchez struck the crossbar. Ruben Vargas then clinched the victory for Switzerland by scoring the decisive penalty, sending the Swiss team through to face Argentina in the quarterfinals.

The match was fiercely contested, with neither team able to find the net during the regulation and extra time periods. Colombia created the most significant scoring opportunities, especially during extra time. Jhon Lucumí's header hit the crossbar, and an errant defensive play from Granit Xhaka allowed Jaminton Campaz a clear chance to score, but he failed to convert the opportunity.

Switzerland had to cope with the absence of several key players, including standout midfielder Johan Manzambi, who was sidelined due to a knee injury sustained during training ahead of the match. Manzambi had been instrumental in the team's tournament run, contributing three goals and two assists in the earlier matches. Despite concerns about his fitness, Vargas, who had also departed training early the day before, made a successful return and ultimately scored the match-winning penalty.

Gregor Kobel praised the team’s resolve in facing a challenging Colombian side, particularly with the majority of the crowd supporting Colombia. 'They had the crowd on their side, so it was a tough game for us,' Kobel commented, acknowledging the mental strength required by the Swiss players throughout the match. 'Obviously we had a few players missing so, yeah, it was a big challenge for us.'

Colombia’s exit marks another disappointing end to their World Cup campaign, following their elimination in a penalty shootout against England during the 2018 tournament. The South American team was seeking to reach the quarterfinals for only the second time, having previously achieved this in 2014.

For Switzerland, this victory signifies a historic achievement, marking the first time they have won multiple knockout matches in the same World Cup. Switzerland had previously reached the round of 16 in the tournaments held in 2014, 2018, and 2022 but failed to progress beyond that stage on each occasion. The upcoming match against Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday is part of Switzerland’s push for a place in the semifinals.

The tournament continues to produce dramatic matches, as Argentina recently defeated Egypt 3-2 in another round of 16 showdown, staged in Atlanta, Georgia. Argentina overcame an early two-goal deficit, with Enzo Fernandez securing their spot in the quarterfinals with a last-minute header.

The quarterfinal fixtures will commence on 9 July, featuring several anticipated matches, including France versus Morocco and Spain against Belgium. Switzerland's progress reflects a significant moment in their footballing history, while Colombia will look towards future competitions to redeem their World Cup ambitions.
