SpaceX to Establish $100 Billion Launch Facility in Louisiana

Elon Musk's aerospace company, SpaceX, has announced plans to build its largest launch facility in Louisiana, a project estimated to cost $100 billion (£73 billion). Named Starbase, Louisiana, this expansive site will cover 125,000 acres (50,585 hectares) and will significantly extend SpaceX's operational capabilities beyond its existing bases in Texas and Florida.

The construction of the facility is scheduled to commence next year, with an aim to support multiple Starship flights annually for various missions targeting Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and potentially beyond. SpaceX made this announcement on Tuesday, highlighting the strategic importance of this new site for its long-term goals.

In a significant milestone, SpaceX’s shares began trading on New York's Nasdaq in June, marking the largest stock market debut in history. The company anticipates launching its first Starship flight from the new Louisiana facility by 2029.

The project is expected to bolster the local economy, adding more than 3,000 jobs directly linked to the site. Furthermore, the Louisiana Economic Development agency estimates that over 8,100 additional jobs may be created indirectly as a result of the facility's operations. In terms of economic impact, the average salary for workers at this site is expected to be 192% higher than the current regional average.

Officials from the Louisiana Economic Development agency stated, "The historic project will establish Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace, with the capacity and infrastructure needed to dramatically increase launch frequency and expand access to space."

The Louisiana site will share its name with another SpaceX installation located at the southern tip of Texas. In 2025, residents in Cameron County voted to incorporate the area where SpaceX conducts testing and development as a city named Starbase.

Musk has laid out ambitious ambitions for SpaceX, including plans to send humans to Mars, create advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems, and launch data centres into space. Recently, SpaceX and Musk's other venture, Tesla, revealed plans for a $16.8 billion AI chip manufacturing facility in Texas. This facility aims to cater to the increasing need for computational power required for both AI and robotics initiatives over the coming years.

As a newly listed entity, SpaceX is under pressure to demonstrate its profitability while pursuing these extensive expansion efforts. Following its stock market debut, shares have decreased by over 30% from their initial highs but remain above the $135 offer price, indicating a mixed response from investors as the company moves forward with its ambitious plans.
