Smriti Mandhana Sets Records in Women's Cricket with 124 Runs
India's cricket talent, Smriti Mandhana, delivered a remarkable performance in the Women's T20I, scoring 124 runs, her highest in international T20 cricket. This achievement not only marked a personal best but also established her as the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket across all formats. By amassing 10,880 runs and 18 centuries at the young age of 30, Mandhana has surpassed notable figures such as Mithali Raj and Meg Lanning.
In a thrilling display of skill, Mandhana hit a hat-trick of sixes in the 18th over, which elevated her past Mithali Raj's previous record. Reflecting on her extraordinary innings during a post-match conference, Mandhana stated, "Yeah, till I was batting, I didn't know what record (I had broken) because I didn't know what exact runs (I had made). But looking back, I'd say a very good day for Indian cricket. Of course, Mithali (Raj) di has been such a legend and a role model."
Mandhana’s accomplishment in the match further solidified her position by claiming the title as the player with the most centuries in women’s international cricket. She expressed her admiration for the legends whose records she has now surpassed, stating, "Two of the legends of the game: Meg Lanning and Mithali Raj. These are the people I've grown up watching. I’ve tried to take a lot of things from them as batters. So really happy that I could go past them in whatever ways."
Despite her individual achievements, Mandhana highlighted areas for improvement within the team, especially regarding the middle-order batting performance. In a previous match, the team lost eight wickets for just 46 runs during critical stages. In her latest outing, the next highest score after her innings was Shafali Verma’s 28, with Pratika Rawal, Richa Ghosh, and Harmanpreet Kaur all scoring in single digits.
Mandhana conveyed confidence in her teammates’ abilities to rise to the occasion in future matches, stating, "It's (not) easy conditions to bat out there, we know it can be a little tricky. Everyone is a world-class batter in the middle-order as well, and there's no doubt they will be able to adapt."
India is set to face arch-rivals Pakistan in their next Asia Cup encounter, which promises to be a significant challenge for the squad as they continue their campaign. As one of the sport's rising stars, Smriti Mandhana's performance is a source of inspiration for many, and her achievements are a testament to her hard work and dedication to cricket.
