Smriti Mandhana Appointed New Captain of India's Women's Cricket Team
Smriti Mandhana takes over as captain from Harmanpreet Kaur in a leadership change for India’s women's cricket team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally announced Smriti Mandhana as the new captain of the Indian women's cricket team. This follows the resignation of renowned skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who has led the team for an extended period.

Smriti Mandhana made her international debut in 2013 and has served as the vice-captain under Kaur. Over her burgeoning career, Mandhana has taken the reins in 18 Twenty20 Internationals and four One-Day Internationals, further showcasing her leadership capacity. Most recently, she achieved the notable recognition of being the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket, surpassing the tally of former captain Mithali Raj.

Additionally, Mandhana holds the record for the most centuries in women's cricket across all formats, accounting for a total of 18 centuries.

Commenting on her new role, Mandhana expressed, “To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply.”

Mandhana also acknowledged the significant contributions of her predecessor, saying, “I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey.”

Aware of the challenges ahead, she stated, “I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and look forward to working with the team, learning along the way and giving my best to take Indian Cricket forward.”

In addition to her international experience, Mandhana has successfully led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Women’s Premier League, guiding the franchise to two title victories.

The Indian women's team is set to play against Zimbabwe starting on 16 October, with a series consisting of three Twenty20 Internationals followed by three One-Day Internationals. This marks an important period for the team as they transition to a new leadership era under Mandhana's guidance.
