Significant Missile Assault on Kyiv: Casualties and Damage Reported
Russia has launched its most extensive ballistic missile assault on Kyiv since the onset of the war, according to Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The attack occurred early on Sunday and lasted for several hours, resulting in one fatality and injuring at least 16 others, as reported by Ukrainian officials.
The missile strikes spanned six districts within the capital, highlighting Ukraine's vulnerability to aerial attacks amidst a significant shortage of Patriot air defence systems. These systems are considered crucial for intercepting ballistic missiles effectively. The ongoing conflict, now in its fifth year, has intensified, with Ukraine facing nearly daily air strikes from Russian forces.
This latest barrage has raised alarm within Ukraine, where domestic tensions are also escalating following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent reshuffle of his cabinet. The decision to dismiss Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has drawn widespread criticism, with some alleging it could undermine Ukraine's current military momentum. Citizens have taken to the streets to express their discontent over the leadership change.
The missile strikes have ignited fires across Kyiv, damaging various structures, including residential buildings, industrial sites, and vehicles, according to the State Emergency Service. Firefighters managed to rescue four individuals from a private home in the Sviatoshynskyi district and several others from a three-storey building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Despite their efforts, one resident was found deceased. Further responses to numerous fires were noted in several other districts.
In a statement on X, Foreign Minister Sybiha condemned the missile attack, labelling it a 'brutal terrorist attack on the Ukrainian capital' and called for a strong international response. 'We need devastating pressure on Moscow to end this terror,' he stated.
Additional strikes occurred in the Dnipropetrovsk region, resulting in another casualty, according to regional official Oleksandr Ganzha. There was also a deadly drone attack in the Zaporizhia region that claimed the life of a train conductor, as reported by Ukraine's national railway company.
July has seen multiple large-scale assaults by Russia on Kyiv, deploying ballistic missiles on at least seven occasions. Ukraine's air force confirmed that they successfully intercepted 18 out of 41 missiles launched during this recent attack.
Moreover, Ukraine's military said it targeted two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea, a move aimed at disrupting fuel supplies to the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula. President Zelenskyy reiterated the urgent need for protection against ballistic missiles, stating, 'Interceptors are needed every day.' He expressed gratitude towards allies for their support in delivering necessary air defence systems.
In a separate development, the United States has indicated a willingness to grant Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically, which may enhance its defence capabilities, although timelines for this initiative remain unclear.
As Ukraine continues to grapple with the fallout from these attacks, the focus on bolstering air defence remains a priority amidst ongoing hostilities.
