Shubman Gill Confirms Hardik Pandya's Path Back to Fitness
Indian cricket is currently navigating the absence of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has been sidelined with injuries since the Indian Premier League. Team captain Shubman Gill addressed Pandya's situation during a press conference on the eve of the first One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand, set to commence on November 4. The Indian team is engaged in a five-match ODI series, marking its most significant home fixture since 2018-19.
Hardik Pandya's last competitive appearance was on May 24, after which he struggled with a series of injuries that have hindered his recovery and participation. Currently receiving treatment at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence, Pandya is undergoing rehabilitation for multiple fitness concerns.
In the press briefing, Shubman Gill spoke highly of Pandya's unique skill set, stating that the all-rounder possesses the ability to bowl effectively with both new and old balls, making him a valuable asset in various phases of a match. Gill noted, 'Firstly, Hardik Pandya is a great all-rounder. Not many players in the world have his skill set. We have had multiple conversations about his situation.'
As the team prepares for the future, Gill highlighted the necessity for Pandya to play domestic cricket in order to demonstrate his fitness before he can be considered for selection in the national squad. This step will likely see Pandya participating in upcoming tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy or the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scheduled for November and December.
Pandya’s injury woes began during the IPL 2026 season when he missed several matches due to back spasms. Although he returned to play towards the end of the tournament, his fitness issues persisted during his rehabilitation, leading to further setbacks. In June, a quadriceps strain prevented him from joining the Indian side for an ODI series against Afghanistan. Subsequent injuries, including pain in his knee, meant that he missed the white-ball series against New Zealand.
As the ODI series commences, Gill expressed optimism about Pandya's potential return, reinforcing the importance of having him back for the team's lower-middle order, particularly in the critical positions of No. 7 and No. 8. 'Whenever Hardik bhai comes back, No. 7 or 8 will also be taken care of,' Gill commented.
India's ODI series against New Zealand will consist of matches between November 4 and November 15, followed by a two-Test series commencing on November 19. This schedule allows little time for recovery from the demands of the preceding ODIs.
The absence of Pandya, alongside other key players, underscores the challenges faced by the Indian side in their preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027. As they strive for victory in the current series, the return of Pandya remains a crucial objective for the team as they look towards strengthening their lineup for future competitions.
