Shekhar Suman Supports Peaceful Protests Amid Election Controversy
Recent days have seen a surge of support from Bollywood celebrities for protests in Delhi calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These protests stem from alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, raising concerns among citizens regarding the electoral process.
Shekhar Suman, known for his political satire, shared his perspective on the importance of peaceful dissent during an appearance on The Lallantop. He emphasised that protests are integral to both politics and society, stating, "Protests are a part of politics, and they are also a part of society. We have been protesting ever since we were growing up. When we don't get something, we start protesting at home, saying that we want this or that. If protests are carried out peacefully and do not turn violent, I think they are absolutely right and should take place."
He underscored the philosophy espoused by Mahatma Gandhi, asserting that when demands are unmet, people have a duty to express their grievances. Suman remarked, "When the people raise a collective voice, the government also pays attention to it. This should continue to happen. Every person should be able to protest for what they believe in, wherever they are and whatever their position in society may be. I see it as a very positive thing in society."
In related developments, actor Sanjay Dutt appeared on Shekhar Suman's show, sparking controversy with his comments regarding the current state of peace in India. Dutt expressed, "The people of this country are so lovely. There should be peace here. I can’t feel that peace in our country anymore. We Indians are large-hearted people, and we are hospitable. We have given so much, and we should always remain that way. I pray to Shivji that those days come back soon."
His remarks attracted criticism from various users on social media, leading Dutt to issue a clarification stating that his comments had been misinterpreted. He referred to the segment as 'scripted' to alleviate the backlash he received.
Shekhar Suman stood by Dutt, asserting that the actor holds significant respect for the country and its people, reinforcing the notion that public figures often navigate intricate sentiments when addressing controversial issues. As protests continue to unfold in Delhi, the sentiment surrounding civic engagement and the right to peaceful assembly remains a focal point in the ongoing dialogue about democracy and governance in India.
