Shehzad Poonawalla Resigns from BJP Again Citing Personal Reasons
Shehzad Poonawalla, the prominent national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has submitted his resignation for the second time, requesting the party leadership to accept his departure and relieve him of his responsibilities. In a letter addressed to BJP President Nitin Nabin, Poonawalla expressed his gratitude for the party's initial refusal to accept his resignation, urging him to reconsider.
However, after what he described as extensive reflection, Poonawalla insisted on his decision to leave the party role and active membership. He referenced 'certain individuals' who influenced his decision, although he did not specify who they were. Poonawalla, who joined the BJP in late 2021, quickly rose within the ranks, becoming a significant voice for Muslims within the party.
Explaining the need for his resignation, he pointed to urgent financial and personal matters. He clarified that while he would transition to the private sector, he intended to continue supporting the vision and initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP in any capacity possible. "I am only leaving the Vyavastha, not the Vyakti or Vichar," he remarked, suggesting that his departure from the party’s organisational structure did not mean a complete withdrawal from his political alignment with Modi or the BJP’s ideology.
Poonawalla highlighted that his choice was not based on any animosity, expressing his appreciation for Modi and other senior leaders, such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. He acknowledged the opportunities the BJP had afforded him over his five-year tenure.
In his letter to Nabin, he shared profound sentiments about his journey as a young, non-dynastic Muslim figure in a political landscape often dominated by established families. As a lawyer-turned-politician, he initially started with the Congress party but gained national recognition after departing from it and vocally opposing Rahul Gandhi's leadership. Poonawalla frequently represented the BJP in various media formats, articulating the party's positions on contentious issues and countering opposition narratives. Through his resignation, he is now requesting formal acknowledgement from the BJP leadership.
