Shakti Sharma Becomes First Female Non-Medical Air Vice Marshal

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has made history by becoming the first non-medical woman officer in the Indian Defence Forces to reach the rank of Air Vice Marshal. This milestone was announced on Tuesday, following her assumption of duties as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at the Air Headquarters, effective September 1.

Shakti Sharma, who was commissioned into the Indian Air Force's Education Branch on June 18, 1994, has a distinguished career spanning over three decades. She has served in a variety of roles across training establishments, field stations, command headquarters, and the Air Headquarters, accumulating extensive experience in various facets of military operations.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence highlighted her elevation as a landmark achievement for women in the Indian military. "This is a historic milestone for the Indian Air Force. Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma's promotion marks a new chapter in the journey of women officers in India's defence forces," it noted.

Throughout her career, Air Vice Marshal Sharma has been actively involved in several key initiatives aimed at enhancing academic collaboration and institutional partnerships. Notably, she played a pivotal role in establishing the IAF Chairs of Excellence at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Pune University. These initiatives are intended to foster strategic defence-related collaboration and academic excellence.

Additionally, Shakti Sharma has made history by being the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School, serving as principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala. Her groundbreaking achievements serve as an inspiration for future generations of women aspiring to enter military leadership.
