Shabana Azmi Discusses Audience Reception of Batwara 1947

The film Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol, had been highly anticipated, but it has faced challenges in connecting with its audience, as evidenced by its disappointing box office returns. Shabana Azmi, who plays a significant role in the film, recently commented on its lack of acceptance, suggesting that part of the issue may stem from the audience's hesitance to see Deol in a Muslim role.

In an interview with Zoom, Azmi stated, "The thing is that you cannot accept Sunny Deol as a Muslim. In Coolie and in many other films, Amitabh Bachchan very comfortably played Muslim characters. In Deewaar, he put 786 and that was accepted. So how do we understand this? Are they creating an environment where such decisions are being taken on purpose? I am not able to understand. I am surprised at how people are reacting to it. Even the ones who have watched the film think Sunny Deol is playing a Pakistani. He is not. It is simply not registering in their heads." This perspective highlights her frustration regarding audience perceptions and their inability to adapt to different portrayals.

Azmi also defended the film's narrative, asserting it does not engage in any politically incorrect themes. She expressed disappointment at how sensitive subjects related to the subcontinent's Partition are perceived in today's society, stating, "The problem is that you cannot touch the subject of Hindustan and Pakistan in this setup, which is very disappointing. This is a film which is politically not incorrect in any way. You can’t find fault with it. Sunny has done a very good job. It is very surprising and also contradictory that when I meet people, why are they praising the film so much?"

In Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol portrays Sikandar Mirza, a dedicated businessman from Meerut who, along with his wife Hamida and their children, is forced to flee to Pakistan amid rising communal tensions. As the story unfolds, the family finds refuge in a camp before being provided with a haveli, where they meet Mai, an elderly Hindu woman played by Azmi. Mai refuses to abandon her home, waiting for the return of her son. The relationship between Mirza's family and Mai becomes central to the narrative, emphasising themes of compassion and resilience amidst adversity.

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Batwara 1947 aims to provide a fresh perspective on a tumultuous chapter in Indian history, but its reception thus far indicates that it may require more time to resonate with audiences. As the film navigates complex cultural themes, it remains to be seen whether public opinion will evolve as viewers engage more deeply with its story.
