Security Breach at PM Modi's Event in Mumbai: Two Arrested

Mumbai police arrested two men for an attempted security breach during an event featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Jio World Plaza on Monday. The incident took place shortly before Modi was scheduled to speak at the 7th Global Fintech Fest, raising concerns regarding security protocols around high-profile events.

The arrested individuals, identified as Rohan Parekh, 24, from Khar, and Dilip Kunde, a former serviceman, attempted to gain access to the venue by asserting that they were affiliated with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). They allegedly produced a digital identity card on a mobile device to convince security personnel of their claims.

The incident unfolded when Parekh reportedly bypassed initial checks, claiming to work for the PMO. However, things took a sharp turn when one of his companions was found with a revolver, prompting security to alert law enforcement. The Special Protection Group, which typically manages security for the Prime Minister, had been on alert, having prepared for his arrival days in advance.

Following the apprehension of the suspects at the mall, CCTV footage revealed that the group arrived in a luxury vehicle bearing registration details linked to Parekh. Detailed investigations led police to Parekh's residence, where he revealed that Kunde was in fact accompanying him as a bodyguard.

Both men are now being questioned about their intentions and claims, with police further investigating whether any accomplices assisted them. During the process, additional details about Parekh surfaced, indicating a complex background linked to employment offers suggesting a false association with the PMO. His lawyer mentioned that Parekh had been misled in the past regarding a purported job in the PMO, complete with a forgery of an official letter.

Kunde, who worked as a bodyguard for Parekh's family, was found in possession of a licensed revolver, leading authorities to further scrutinise both men. They have been remanded into police custody until a hearing scheduled for September 11. Meanwhile, police are conducting searches for a third suspect who has not yet been apprehended.

The Jio World Plaza serves as a prominent venue within the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, and this incident has cast a spotlight on the importance of rigorous security measures during events attended by high-ranking officials.

A police spokesperson affirmed that ensuring the safety of such venues is paramount, particularly given the high-profile nature of attendees. As investigations continue, authorities seek to ascertain the full extent of the security lapse and prevent any future incidents.
