Sarah Khalifa Sentenced to Death in Major Drug Trafficking Case

A Cairo court has sentenced Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 co-defendants to death by hanging after convicting them of involvement in a drug trafficking ring. The case, which has drawn significant media attention, revolves around a criminal organisation accused of importing materials used in drug production.

Sarah Khalifa, 39, known for her role on the crime-focused programme 'Mission Impossible' on the Al-Mehwar television channel, was found guilty alongside ten others, while nine co-accused received life sentences and seven were acquitted. Khalifa has publicly denied the charges, claiming she had no involvement with drugs. During a court hearing, she expressed her innocence, stating, "I have never smoked a cigarette in my life," and appealed for clemency. Khalifa reportedly became emotional in court, appealing to the judge, "Please listen to me, sir. My parents raised me well; they are people who pray, and I don’t need drug money."

The trial revealed that investigators seized over 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds) of narcotics. Prosecutors supported their case with evidence gathered from over 20 witness statements, electronic communications, and video recordings. The court learned that the gang structured its operations with defined roles for procurement, manufacturing, and distribution of narcotics.

In addition to the drug charges, authorities discovered firearms and ammunition linked to the defendants. The ruling was confirmed after the court consulted with Egypt's grand mufti for a non-binding religious perspective, a legal requirement in death penalty cases.

Khalifa's legal team has indicated plans to appeal the sentence at the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court in the Egyptian judicial system. Under recent judicial reforms, defendants are afforded two channels for appealing such decisions, including a potential retrial.

The court's decision marks a notable instance in Egypt's strict stance on drug-related crimes, where the death penalty is frequently applied for drug trafficking, terrorism, and premeditated murder. Khalifa has also been sentenced separately to three years in prison for assaulting and recording her driver without consent.

This case brings to light broader issues regarding drug trafficking in Egypt and reflects ongoing efforts to curb drug-related crime in the region. According to a 2025 report from Amnesty International, there were 492 death sentences issued in Egypt that year, with 23 being carried out. Critics have raised concerns over the application of the death penalty, particularly in cases that do not involve homicide, arguing that such measures do not align with international legal standards.

The severity of the ruling illustrates a firm judicial approach to tackling drug offences, amid a landscape where narcotics trafficking and associated violence create ongoing social challenges.
