Samsung May Use Exynos 2700 in Galaxy S27 Ultra Amid Snapdragon Issues
Samsung Electronics is contemplating the return of its Exynos processors in its Galaxy S series, specifically the Galaxy S27 Ultra. This comes after reports indicating that Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, which was expected to power the device, is experiencing significant overheating issues.
Qualcomm Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire has stated that reports claiming the Snapdragon chip exhibits heating problems are "100% NOT accurate." However, internal assessments from Samsung have highlighted performance concerns associated with the Snapdragon processor during high-load tasks, leading to heat generation and subsequent performance throttling.
These tests, as cited by the technology news outlet SEDaily, revealed that the Snapdragon chip exceeded temperature thresholds, prompting Samsung to communicate its concerns to Qualcomm last month. The South Korean tech giant had set a mid-October deadline for Qualcomm to rectify these issues.
If Qualcomm is unable to address the performance and thermal requirements set by Samsung, the company is ready to implement the Exynos 2700 as an alternative. This processor is being developed by Samsung's System LSI division and is constructed using Samsung Foundry's second-generation 2nm process technology. Equipped with a 10-core CPU, the Exynos 2700 is reported to match or slightly exceed the performance of Qualcomm's offerings.
The potential shift to the Exynos chip not only promises to alleviate cost concerns for Samsung but may also enhance the capacity utilisation of its semiconductor production division. Such a move would fortify Samsung's internal operations while potentially improving performance reliability for end-users.
The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to enter mass production later this year, with a launch anticipated in early 2027. Alongside the S27 Ultra, Samsung is also expected to release the Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27+, and Galaxy S27 Pro, potentially all featuring the Exynos 2700 chip in various markets.
This would mark a significant change in Samsung's approach, as the company has relied exclusively on Qualcomm chips for its flagship devices over the past several years. The decision comes as Samsung aims to balance innovation and performance in a competitive smartphone landscape.
