Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Ultra 2 Receive Extended Software Support

Samsung has officially announced extended software support for its newest smartwatches during the Unpacked event in London. The Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 are set to benefit from a policy of five major operating system upgrades, alongside a commitment to provide five years of security updates. This is a notable change from previous models, which only received four OS upgrades while retaining a five-year patch window. However, the status of older models, such as the Galaxy Watch 8 and the original Galaxy Watch Ultra, regarding this new upgrade policy remains uncertain.

Both new models will be equipped with Wear OS 7 and Samsung's One UI 9 Watch interface. In addition, they will introduce various enhanced artificial intelligence and health monitoring features fit for modern users. The changes in software support mean that the 2026 models are expected to receive their last major OS update in 2031.

The pre-order period for the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 commenced on July 22, with the official global launch scheduled for August 7. The Galaxy Watch 9 is priced at €409, approximately £352 or $379, while the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, available only in a 47mm configuration with LTE, is listed at €749, around £642 or $699.

These smartwatches aim to enhance user experience significantly, focusing on functionality and long-term usability, which could be vital in retaining customer loyalty in the competitive smartwatch market. Improvements in battery life and preventive health features have also been highlighted as areas of enhancement, addressing feedback from previous generations.

While these updates indicate Samsung's commitment to advancing its wearable technology, the company's historical pattern of frequent firmware policy updates suggests that further changes may still be on the horizon.
