Samrat Choudhary Becomes Bihar's First BJP Chief Minister
Samrat Choudhary is sworn in as Bihar's first chief minister from the BJP, following the resignation of Nitish Kumar after two decades of leadership.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has marked a significant milestone with the swearing-in of Samrat Choudhary as the new chief minister of Bihar, the eastern state of India. This change comes after the resignation of veteran politician Nitish Kumar, who had dominated Bihar's politics for nearly two decades. Samrat Choudhary succeeds Kumar, having previously served as his deputy.

Choudhary, aged 57, has held various prominent roles within the BJP, including serving as the party's state president, where he spearheaded several major election campaigns across different states. His appointment is particularly notable as he becomes the first chief minister from the BJP in a state where the party has historically struggled to govern independently. Bihar has a population of over 74 million and grapples with significant socio-economic challenges, including high rates of migration as residents seek job opportunities in other regions.

The political landscape shifted considerably with Kumar's resignation, which had been anticipated due to his declining health. Last month, he was elected to the Upper House of parliament, and on Tuesday, he officially stepped down from his role as chief minister, paving the way for Choudhary's appointment. Ravi Shankar Prasad, a senior BJP leader, highlighted the importance of this transition, stating, "Bihar has changed and I must acknowledge that and give him [Kumar] due respect... Now Samrat Choudhary is set to become the chief minister. This is a big and historic day."

Samrat Choudhary comes from a politically active family; his father, Shakuni Choudhary, served as a legislator for more than two decades. His mother, Parvati Devi, was also involved in politics, which has provided him with a robust foundation in the political arena. Choudhary's background is significant as he represents a caste group designated as Other Backward Class (OBC) in Bihar, a category that includes communities identified as socially and economically disadvantaged. This demographic plays a crucial role in the state's electorate, where caste remains a pivotal element in political dynamics.

With more than three decades of political experience, Choudhary's career has seen him associated with various parties. He initially was a member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the principal opposition party in Bihar, before aligning with Kumar's Janata Dal (United) in 2014. In 2017, he moved to the BJP when Kumar rejoined the BJP after breaking alliances with other parties. Following Kumar's latest shift in alliances in 2022, Choudhary emerged as one of his vocal critics. However, with the recent restoration of BJP's alliance with JD(U), Choudhary repaired his ties with Kumar and assumed the role of deputy chief minister, alongside also serving as home minister, a key position overseeing the state's police forces.

Choudhary's ascendance to chief ministership signifies the BJP's intentions to diversify its political representation and strengthen its social base in Bihar, a strategy anticipated to yield long-term benefits. However, he faces considerable challenges in navigating a political landscape ingrained with Kumar's legacy.

Ultimately, Choudhary's appointment marks a historic moment for the BJP in Bihar, positioning him at the helm of a state with a complex political heritage and pressing socio-economic issues that require immediate attention.
