Safe Return of Pilgrims from Nepal Amid Flash Floods
Four pilgrims return to Nagpur after being stranded in Nepal due to severe floods, alleviating family anxieties.

Four pilgrims from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India, have returned safely to Nagpur following a stressful ordeal in Nepal. The group had been visiting the Pashupatinath temple when flash floods struck, causing significant disruption in the area. The pilgrims, who included three women, made their journey back home on the morning of August 29, bringing relief to their families who had been anxiously waiting for news.

Indira Chaudhary, one of the returning pilgrims, recounted their journey, stating that they had departed for Nepal by train on August 19, arriving at the temple on August 21. After completing their pilgrimage, they returned to Kathmandu on August 25, only to find themselves trapped due to the aftermath of the floods that swept through Rasuwa and other parts of central Nepal on August 27.

The floodwaters resulted in the loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, with many becoming stranded, leaving nearly 2,000 people unaccounted for. The group from Vidarbha was fortunate to be outside the main affected area, but they faced challenges when attempting to leave Kathmandu. Initially, plans were made for a return by bus, facilitated by local officials; however, those buses were turned back before they could reach the pilgrims.

Concerned for their safety, families of the stranded pilgrims opted for flights instead. Chaudhary highlighted that while they did not join the buses with other pilgrims, they secured flights from Kathmandu to Delhi. From Delhi, the group took the Kerala Express to complete their journey back to Nagpur.

As of now, efforts are ongoing to facilitate the return of 102 remaining pilgrims from Maharashtra, who have boarded a train from Patna, Bihar. The Chief Minister’s Office continues to monitor and assist the situation to ensure all pilgrims return safely. The chaotic journey has not only tested the resolve of the pilgrims but has also highlighted the need for improved emergency response measures in the region.

The return of the four pilgrims has been marked as a significant relief for their families, who had been in a state of anxiety during the days of uncertainty. Chaudhary’s son, Harshal, expressed gratitude upon their safe return, reflecting the collective concern felt by families across the region.
