Russian Drone Strike in Kryvyi Rih Shopping Centre Claims 16 Lives
At least 16 individuals have lost their lives following a Russian drone strike on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. According to local officials, the attack took place in the city’s largest mall, resulting in over 130 injuries, including 23 children. Reports indicate that there are people still trapped under the rubble.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as an 'absolutely cynical and despicable' act, which involved two waves of drone strikes. The second wave specifically targeted emergency responders arriving at the scene. Footage verified by the BBC shows the second drone impacting the already ablaze shopping centre located in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk region, confirmed that while 15 fatalities were initially reported, the death toll has risen due to additional casualties, including two individuals who succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Hanzha announced that emergency workers have continued their search for survivors, with at least nine people, including two children, currently unaccounted for.
The scale of devastation prompted rescue teams from four other Ukrainian regions to be dispatched to assist in the rescue efforts. Kryvyi Rih’s Mayor, Oleksandr Vilkul, characterised the aggressors as 'animals' and noted that the drones flew at exceptionally low altitudes during the assault.
In addition to the attack in Kryvyi Rih, separate incidents in Ukraine's southern Mykolaiv region resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including three children. Another two fatalities were reported in the north-eastern Kharkiv region. In a separate occurrence, three people were injured in Zaporizhzhia when a drone exploded near a taxi.
This incident follows a significant missile and drone attack in Kyiv a day prior, which led to the deaths of 17 people and injured over 40. Buildings, including flats and warehouses, were hit during the overnight assault, causing extensive damage to a children's hospital and a school.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military has launched strikes targeting oil refineries and a military airfield inside Russia. These operations are part of a broader strategy to intensify attacks on Russian energy facilities and supply chains crucial to funding the ongoing conflict.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has reportedly maintained control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory in the south-east, as fuel queues lengthen ahead of the upcoming Russian Flag Day celebrations. Ukraine has been under martial law since the onset of the invasion, which has led to the postponement of elections and heightened state control over various aspects of life.
The current situation remains precarious as rescue operations continue, and officials fear the death toll could rise further amidst ongoing hostilities.
