Russian Drone Strike Hits Ukrainian Intelligence HQ in Kyiv
A Russian drone attack on Ukraine's SBU headquarters marks a major escalation, prompting calls for a significant response from Kyiv.

The headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) was struck by a Russian drone in a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict. The incident took place in the heart of Kyiv, producing thick plumes of black smoke visible across the skyline. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he had directed the SBU to formulate an 'appropriate, tangible response' to the attack, describing it as an alarming provocation. The foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, also characterised it as a 'major escalation,' urging international partners to condemn the incident and increase pressure on the Russian government.

Following the attack on Friday, the area surrounding the SBU headquarters, located on Volodymyrska Street near St Sophia Cathedral—designated a UNESCO World Heritage site—was cordoned off by armed officers. Emergency services, including numerous ambulances, were deployed to the scene. 'Unfortunately, a Russian drone hit the central building of the SBU,' Zelenskyy noted in a post on Telegram, emphasising that the drone had targeted the office of the SBU's head.

Kyiv has experienced a continuous bombardment of drone and missile attacks from Russia over the past week. During a recent visit by US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Zelenskyy urged Russia to cease its assaults, stressing Ukraine's commitment to ensuring the safety of Russian airspace while the delegates were in Moscow.

Ukraine is currently grappling with a shortage of US-made Patriot missile defence systems, which are vital for intercepting aerial threats. Recent Russian assaults have increasingly involved advanced jet-powered drones capable of reaching speeds of up to 250 miles per hour, complicating interception efforts.

It is uncommon for Russian strikes to hit government facilities in central Kyiv, particularly in broad daylight. Residents reported hearing the explosion from several blocks away. This incident is expected to escalate retaliatory actions between Moscow and Kyiv, with both sides intensifying efforts to degrade one another's capabilities and morale.

According to Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, at least nine individuals sustained injuries from the drone strike. Stanislav Zavertailo, co-owner of a nearby café, reported that one of his customers was hurt as shockwaves from the blast shattered the café's windows. He described the scene, noting that a customer was enjoying a poppy seed roll at the time, and customers quickly sought refuge in an underground shelter, fearing secondary strikes—a tactic often employed by Russian forces.

An hour after the initial strike, residents remained uneasy, with Zavertailo expressing concern: 'We are all waiting for another attack.' The SBU, tasked with managing critical operations against Russia, previously executed Operation Spiderweb, which resulted in significant losses for the Russian military.

As tensions rise, the attack comes just days before the anticipated visit of Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to Kyiv. Diplomatic efforts to resolve Russia's ongoing invasion, now entering its fifth year, have stagnated, particularly as US attention has recently shifted towards the conflict in Iran. The ramifications of this latest strike are yet to be fully realised, but they underscore the fragile state of security in Ukraine amidst escalating hostilities.
