Russia-Ukraine War: Easter Ceasefire Violations Reported
Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of repeatedly violating a temporary ceasefire declared for Orthodox Easter, as the conflict continues into its fifth year.
The truce, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin following a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was intended to pause fighting for 32 hours over the religious holiday. However, both sides reported hundreds of alleged breaches within hours of its implementation.
Conflicting claims over violations
Ukraine’s military said it had recorded more than 2,000 violations by Russian forces by early Sunday morning. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, these included dozens of ground assaults, hundreds of artillery attacks, and extensive drone activity along the front line.
In a statement, the military reported: “As of 7:00 am… 2,299 ceasefire violations were recorded,” detailing strikes involving artillery, attack drones, and first-person-view (FPV) drones.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence issued its own figures, accusing Ukrainian forces of nearly 2,000 violations over a similar period. It said Ukrainian units had carried out artillery fire, drone strikes, and multiple attempts to advance positions, all of which it claimed had been repelled.
Regional officials in Russia also reported attacks. In the western Kursk region, bordering Ukraine, authorities said a drone strike hit a petrol station in the town of Lgov, injuring three people, including a child. Separate reports from neighbouring Belgorod region indicated additional drone incidents that left several injured.
Limited calm despite hostilities
Despite the accusations, there were signs that the ceasefire reduced the intensity of some forms of warfare. Ukrainian officials said there had been no long-range missile strikes or large-scale aerial bombings during the truce period.
A Ukrainian officer stationed in the northeastern Kharkiv region described the situation as relatively calm compared with recent weeks. He said the lull allowed soldiers to briefly observe Easter traditions, including attending outdoor religious services.
The officer noted that while the ceasefire had not been fully respected, the reduction in hostilities offered a rare moment of respite for troops.
Kremlin stance on peace conditions
The Kremlin signalled that it would not extend the ceasefire unless Ukraine agreed to Russia’s broader demands. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said a lasting peace would only be possible if Russia’s objectives were met.
He indicated that Moscow still seeks control over significant parts of eastern Ukraine, particularly the Donetsk region, where fighting remains intense. Russia currently controls only part of the territory but has stated it aims to secure it بالكامل.
Ukraine has rejected such conditions, maintaining that any settlement must respect its territorial integrity.
Stalled peace efforts
Efforts to broker a wider ceasefire have struggled to gain traction. Talks supported by the United States have failed to produce a breakthrough, with both sides holding firm on key issues such as territorial control.
Diplomatic momentum has also been affected by shifting global priorities, including rising tensions in the Middle East, which have drawn attention away from the conflict in Ukraine.
Kyiv has proposed freezing the conflict along current front lines as a potential basis for negotiations. However, Moscow has rejected this approach, insisting on broader territorial concessions.
A pattern of fragile truces
The latest ceasefire follows a similar attempt during Orthodox Easter the previous year, which also saw both sides accuse each other of widespread violations.
Analysts say such temporary truces often expose the deep mistrust between the two sides, making sustained peace agreements difficult to achieve.
While the Easter pause appeared to slightly reduce the scale of attacks in some areas, the continued reports of violations underscore the challenges facing any meaningful ceasefire in the conflict.
As the truce expires, fighting is expected to resume at full intensity, with little indication that a long-term settlement is imminent.
