Russia Strikes Ukrainian Energy Facilities Following Ceasefire Announcement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reports strikes on energy sites after Trump's ceasefire declaration with Russia, highlighting ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian forces targeted six energy facilities just hours after United States President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between the two nations. Despite Trump's declaration that the ceasefire would come into effect immediately, Zelensky reported that the strikes included hits on gas stations and vital infrastructure across Ukraine.

After a Russian strike severely damaged power grids in Izyum, the city experienced widespread blackouts. The attacks also affected energy and railway infrastructure in western Ukraine, as reported by the state news agency Ukrinform. Zelensky noted that the assault resulted in injuries to 33 individuals throughout the country.

In his remarks, Zelensky accused Russia of launching these strikes, stating, "We did not attack, while Russia attacked our gas stations, energy infrastructure, and other facilities." He posited that this was a direct response from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Trump's announcement of the ceasefire.

Amid rising global fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections, Trump's recent call to import Russian diesel has raised concerns. Furthermore, on Monday, Ukraine's state-owned grid operator, Ukrenergo, reported new electricity shortages in Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia, attributed to damage from the Russian attacks. To manage excessive demand on compromised equipment, electricity rationing has been introduced in several regions.

Zelensky expressed disappointment over the violation of the ceasefire, stating on social media platform X that the strikes exemplified Russia's lack of willingness to honour the agreement.

Additionally, Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported a drone strike on a residential building in the Darnytskyi district, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to eleven others. The building and several vehicles in its vicinity were also set ablaze.

Initially, when Trump announced the ceasefire on Sunday, Zelensky remarked that “news to him” a truce was in place. Nevertheless, he expressed support for the ceasefire as a significant step towards peace, contingent on American intervention to ensure compliance from Russia.

On the following day, Trump mentioned they reached an agreement “because I said you agree”, adding that the ongoing war was a calamity worth resolving.

Since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainian and Russian forces have escalated their assaults on energy infrastructures. Both sides contend that facilities they target are legitimate due to their roles in supporting military operations. Recent independent analyses, including from BBC Verify, have indicated a notable rise in attacks on oil and gas assets from both parties in anticipation of winter.

Trump has recently urged Ukraine to refrain from targeting Russian oil infrastructure to facilitate the newly formed agreement for diesel exports to the US and international markets. This temporary measure suspends certain US sanctions on energy imports, which Zelensky branded as a “gift” to Putin.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reiterated support for Trump’s call for a sustainable energy ceasefire, while countries including France, Canada, and the European Union similarly voiced their backing. However, reactions among European officials have varied, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas cautioning that while the bloc welcomes a ceasefire, there remains uncertainty about Russia's intention to adhere to such an agreement. Estonia’s foreign minister labelled the ceasefire as “not working”.
