Russia's Admiral Nakhimov Battlecruiser Returns After Sea Trials

The Russian Navy's largest nuclear-powered battlecruiser, Admiral Nakhimov, has successfully returned to its home port of Severomorsk after completing extensive sea trials. This operation included tests on its advanced weaponry, sensors, and propulsion systems, marking a significant step towards the ship's re-induction into active service.

Admiral Nakhimov, with a full-load displacement of around 28,000 tonnes, is the largest nuclear surface combatant in the world. Originally launched in 1988 under the Soviet Navy, it was withdrawn from active service in the late 1990s. A comprehensive refurbishment began at the Sevmash Shipyard between 2014 and 2015, designed to modernise its dated systems.

The modernised vessel features next-generation capabilities, notably including the hypersonic Zircon missiles and Kalibr land-attack cruise missiles, as well as an upgraded air defence system incorporating the Fort-M and Pantsir-M systems. The battlecruiser is equipped with 80 vertical launch cells for missile deployment and an extensive anti-submarine combat system, enhancing its operational versatility.

The trials were aimed at assessing the upgraded features and overall combat management infrastructure of Admiral Nakhimov. Following the successful completion of these trials, the ship is expected to rejoin the Russian Navy pending the final acceptance processes.

Severomorsk serves as the primary base for the Russian Northern Fleet, hosting a significant number of the country’s nuclear submarines and surface ships. The port is crucial for maintaining Russia's maritime strategy in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. The Admiral Nakhimov's nuclear propulsion allows for long-duration missions without the need for frequent refuelling, further enhancing its operational range across distant maritime areas.

With the return of this powerful asset, analysts suggest that Russia is fortifying its naval presence in the Arctic, indicating an increasing focus on securing its interests in this strategically important region. The capabilities of Admiral Nakhimov reflect a broader trend in modern naval warfare, where advanced technology plays a pivotal role in military strategy and global naval balance.
