Riteish Deshmukh Addresses Historical Criticism of Raja Shivaji Film
Actor Riteish Deshmukh has taken to social media to respond to criticism over his recent film, Raja Shivaji, which depicts the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film’s trailer, released recently, has been a focal point of contention, particularly a specific scene involving a Wagh Nakh, or tiger claw, which features actor Sanjay Dutt.
One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, condemned the film for historical inaccuracies. They pointed out that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj displayed the Wagh Nakh in front of Afzal Khan before the latter's attack, a move alleged to distort the historical account, as per several historians. This user claimed that the weapon was used only after Afzal Khan had attacked Shivaji Maharaj. They expressed dissatisfaction with Deshmukh’s portrayal, questioning whether he was manipulating the proud history of Maharashtra. This user stated, “WHY IS @RITEISHD MANIPULATING & INSULTING CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ'S & MAHARASHTRA'S HISTORY, LEGACY & PRIDE???”
In response, Riteish Deshmukh acknowledged the criticism in a retweet, encouraging viewers to watch the film upon its release on May 1 to find their answers, and expressing hope that they enjoy the film. His tweet included the phrase, “Jai Shivrai,” a traditional salute to the Maharaja. However, the critic appeared unconvinced and emphasized that a film depicting historical figures should address questions raised in promotional material rather than push viewers to find clarification solely through the film.
Despite the backlash, some fans defended the film, arguing that the scene may occur after the actual attack. Comments from supporters suggested that cinema should be viewed as such, noting the involvement of regulatory bodies like the Central Board of Film Certification to ensure appropriate content. One fan stated, “Watch the film first. Riteish Deshmukh must have researched before making the film,” hinting that complaints were premature.
Raja Shivaji also features a star cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, and Genelia D’Souza, who is also a producer on the project alongside Jyoti Deshpande. The film aims to present a significant historical narrative to audiences in both Marathi and Hindi. As the release date approaches, both the positive and negative discussions surrounding the film are likely to continue in the public domain, showcasing the deep connection between cinema and cultural heritage in India.
