Research Highlights Importance of Brain Health and Ageing
Experts discuss healthy ageing strategies to reduce dementia risk, with community initiatives promoting brain health education.

The University of the Sunshine Coast's Thompson Institute is spearheading vital research on Healthy Brain Ageing. This initiative comes in light of dementia becoming Australia's leading cause of death, responsible for nearly 10% of fatalities in 2024. Recent findings suggest that up to 45% of dementia risk could be modifiable through various lifestyle choices.

Visitors to the institute experienced an engaging morning filled with interactive exhibits, enlightening activities, and even dance sessions. These events aimed to underscore that maintaining brain health is not solely about one solution, but rather a holistic approach involving several factors.

Key strategies include remaining physically active, ensuring balanced nutrition, achieving quality sleep, practising mindfulness, and nurturing social connections. These components collectively contribute to a brain-healthy lifestyle, essential for enhancing quality of life as individuals age. Experts emphasise that while aging is unavoidable, proactive steps can be taken to safeguard cognitive health.

In a related initiative, the Alzheimer's Association's programme, "Building Brain-Healthy Habits," offers insights into fostering daily habits that can protect memory and cognitive function. Hosted at no cost at two venues in Humboldt County, California, this educational programme invites community members to take charge of their brain health. Sessions are scheduled for October 7, with locations including Sequoia Springs Senior Living and Silvercrest Residence.

Participants will benefit from information on simple yet effective changes that can have a substantial impact over time. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend, as the programme aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of cognitive decline and the importance of early intervention.

Furthermore, the Alzheimer’s Association is also hosting the "Walk to End Alzheimer’s" on October 10 at the Adorni Center in Humboldt County. The event aims to unify community efforts against Alzheimer's disease, fostering a collaborative spirit in the fight against this debilitating condition. Community members can join without any registration fees or team limitations, promoting inclusivity and encouragement.

As researchers like those at the Thompson Institute work to deepen our understanding of brain health and ageing, the message remains clear: proactive measures can result in significant benefits for cognitive health in later years. The collective efforts of institutions and community organisations highlight the importance of education and action in managing dementia risk. Local communities are encouraged to engage with these initiatives to foster a healthier future, both for individuals and society as a whole.
